A devastating flash flood struck the Village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of a man and two children, local officials confirmed.
The three victims were swept away by unprecedented floodwaters, as described by the village officials.
Mayor Lynn Crawford expressed profound sorrow during a press conference held on Wednesday, stating that, “The biggest catastrophe of all are the lives that we lost.”
Authorities identified the deceased as a man in his 40s or 50s, a four-year-old girl, and a seven-year-old boy.
The children were confirmed to be the offspring of a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss, who was camping with his family at the time of the flooding.
Both the soldier and his spouse sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalized in Texas, receiving medical care.
Brig. Gen. Rory Crooks, the deputy commanding general of the First Armored Division and Fort Bliss, conveyed the community’s grief, stating, “Our hearts are heavy with grief following this devastating loss. The entire Fort Bliss community extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
As of now, the identity of the adult male victim has not been released by officials.
In the wake of the disaster, emergency crews rescued more than 65 individuals, with three needing hospitalization for treatment; fortunately, all are reportedly in stable condition.
Initial reports suggest that between 35 and 50 homes were either damaged or completely destroyed by the floodwaters.
