Explore Nature and Culture with Upcoming Events in Oregon

Oregon is hosting a variety of exciting and educational events in the coming weeks, inviting residents and visitors alike to engage with nature, art, and horticulture.

Beginning with the Hoyt Arboretum Summer Youth Programs, guests can take part in free, drop-in nature education every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday until August 23. These programs are designed for youth and families to engage with the rich ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest while exploring scenic trails at the Hoyt Arboretum, located at 4000 S.W. Fairview Blvd.

Art lovers will enjoy the Art in the Garden exhibition at the Oregon Garden, running daily through September 2. This summerlong showcase features a variety of handcrafted artwork, including stunning glass pieces and unique metal installations, all included with garden admission of $14. The Oregon Garden is located at 879 W. Main St., Silverton.

For families with young children, Honeybee Hikes are offered every Wednesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. through October 1 at Leach Botanical Garden. Children aged 2-5 can accompany an adult for an $8 admission that includes access to the lovely gardens while enjoying wildlife spotting, storytime, and crafting activities.

The 78th Street Heritage Farm invites the public to take part in walking tours led by knowledgeable docents, available on various dates through October 11. Participants will learn about the historic farm and its current contributions to horticultural education, food security, and community enrichment. Pre-registration is required.

Another highlight is the Tea Ceremony Demonstration at Portland Japanese Garden, available on select dates through October 18. Guests can immerse themselves in the Japanese tradition of chado, the way of tea, in a serene garden setting. Admission to the demonstration is included with the general garden entrance fee.

Additionally, Pittock Mansion offers behind-the-scenes and architecture tours through November 9, providing access to areas typically closed to the public and insights into the mansion’s architectural history. General admission to the Pittock Mansion is $23.

For those interested in horticultural education, the East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District is hosting free webinars on various topics from stormwater management to biochar application. Interested participants can find more information and register online.

Local gardening enthusiasts can also participate in monthly club meetings, including the Greater Portland Iris Society on the first Tuesday of each month, and the Oregon Fuchsia Society on the third Tuesday. Meetings often feature guest speakers and discussions centered around horticultural topics.

Guided walks are available at Tualatin Hills Nature Park, with the next Walk With a Friend scheduled for the first Wednesday and third Sunday of each month, providing insights into the local environment.

Those looking to learn more about bonsai cultivation can attend The Art of Bonsai classes at Gresham Japanese Garden, available on the third Thursday and Saturday of each month for a hands-on experience.

Special events in July kick off with a Garlic Growing Workshop on July 12 at the 78th Street Heritage Farm, offering hands-on training for aspiring garlic growers with expert guidance.

The Willamette Valley Lavender Festival & Plein Air Art Show takes place on July 12-13 at Chehalem Cultural Center, showcasing local artisans and lavender-inspired products, along with culinary delights.

Another noteworthy event, Art in the Garden 2025, occurs on July 13 at NatureScaping of SW Washington. This family-friendly day features artisan booths, live music, and various gardening demonstrations.

The community can also partake in Plant Spirit Journey workshops at Hedgerow Herb Co. with sessions on Yarrow and Comfrey, scheduled for July 18 and August 22, respectively, offering practical knowledge about seasonal species.

For those interested in pruning fruit trees, the Home Orchard Education Center will host classes on summer pruning of apples and pears on July 19, July 22, and again on August 2. Participants can learn essential techniques for maintaining healthy fruit production.

A Cultural Demonstration on bonsai by Andrew Robson will take place at the Portland Japanese Garden on July 25, included with the daily admission fee.

Additionally, HOEC will offer a Summer Espalier workshop on August 9, followed by a Tame the Grape! Work & Learn event on August 16, both designed to educate participants on techniques to encourage healthy vine growth and fruit yield.

The Oregon Fuchsia Society will hold its Annual Show from August 22-24 at Portland Nursery, an event not to be missed by fuchsia enthusiasts.

Finally, mark your calendars for the Taste of the Orchard event on September 20. This annual celebration at Home Orchard Education Center offers a delightful farm-to-table experience with fruit and cheese tasting, as well as a variety of culinary options. Tickets start at $65 and include appetizers, entree options, and an open bar.
