President Donald Trump took to his social media platform as Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Russian President Vladimir Putin gathered in Beijing for China’s largest-ever military parade, marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
In his remarks, Trump accused Xi of ‘conspiring against’ the United States as the three leaders participated in the event. He extended warm sentiments to China, while indirectly referencing the geopolitical tensions, stating, ‘May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration. Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.’
Trump emphasized historical American support for China during World War II, questioning whether Xi would acknowledge the sacrifices made by Americans in their efforts to assist China in achieving its freedom. He wrote, ‘The big question to be answered is whether or not President Xi of China will mention the massive amount of support and ‘blood’ that The United States of America gave to China in order to help it to secure its FREEDOM from a very unfriendly foreign invader.’
Reflecting on the past, Trump noted the loss of many American lives, hoping that they would be honored for their bravery and sacrifice in the fight for China’s victory and glory.
At the military parade, Xi hailed the Chinese People’s Liberation Army as a ‘heroic force.’ He spoke of the importance of nations treating each other with equality, asserting, ‘The Chinese nation is a great nation that does not fear violence, and that stands independent and strong.’
Xi highlighted the historical resilience of the Chinese people, stating that they stood united against threats to their survival, and fought for the rejuvenation of the nation and the cause of human justice.
In response to Trump’s accusations, Yuri Ushakov, a senior aide to Putin, dismissed the claim of conspiracy among the three leaders. Ushakov stated, ‘I want to say that no one organized any conspiracies, no one was weaving anything, no conspiracies. Moreover, no one even had that in their minds, none of these three leaders had that.’
He acknowledged the role of the United States and President Trump in the current international arrangements, adding, ‘Everyone understands the role that the United States, the current administration of President Trump and President Trump personally play in the current international arrangements.’
The meeting of the leaders came amid concerns from Ukrainian and Western nations over the collaborations among China, North Korea, and Russia, particularly in the context of Russia’s continued military aggression in Ukraine since February 2022.
After the parade, reports indicated that Putin extended an invitation to meet with Kim on the sidelines. The two leaders met afterward, where Putin expressed gratitude for North Korean troops sent to support Russia’s military operations in Ukraine’s Kursk region.
Putin emphasized the valor of North Korean soldiers, stating, ‘I would like to emphasize that your soldiers fought valiantly and heroically. We will never forget the sacrifices made by your armed forces and the families of your military personnel.’
In turn, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to assist Russia in any capacity needed, expressing, ‘As I said during our previous meeting, if there is anything we can do to help Russia, we will certainly do that, and we will regard this as our fraternal duty.’
The meeting concluded with a warm embrace between Putin and Kim in front of the press, with Putin inviting Kim for a return visit, saying, ‘Come back again.’
The North Korean Foreign Ministry released a statement describing Kim’s arrival in Beijing as ‘enveloped in an atmosphere of the warmest friendship and enthusiastic welcome.’
Ukrainian and Western governments have raised concerns about North Korea supplying ammunition and troops to support Russia’s military endeavors, while also identifying China as a crucial economic lifeline for Moscow during the ongoing conflict.
