Colorado Arts and Culture Weekly Roundup: New Grants, Festivals, and Family Events

RedLine Contemporary Arts Center has announced a new cohort of ‘Arts in Society’ grantees, supporting various arts and culture organizations across Colorado.

The initiative aims to have a positive impact on cross-sector initiatives such as health and environmental programs.

To date, the ‘Arts in Society’ program has distributed over $4 million in grants over nine years.

This year’s funding has supported 24 projects, with grants ranging from $10,000 to $35,000.

According to Lares Feliciano, the art grants manager for RedLine, the selected projects reflect a diverse range of community-driven efforts, showcasing the creative spirit of Colorado.

Activities from youth-directed documentaries to art-infused public transit are among the projects that aim to meet current community needs through creativity.

As part of its upcoming events, RedLine has encouraged individuals to meet all 24 grantees and learn about their exciting projects.

In addition, SeriesFest, dubbed the ‘Sundance of TV,’ returns to Colorado from April 29 through May 4.

The festival will host screenings at the Sie FilmCenter in Denver, along with several other venues throughout the city.

This year’s program will feature five competition categories, including Independent Pilot: Drama, Independent Pilot: Comedy, Unscripted Pilot, Digital Short Series, and Late Night.

The festival will also include special events such as a live podcast taping, a gala, and a spotlight on ‘Bad Indian,’ a pilot episode from local comedian Joshua Emerson.

A highlight of this season is the Innovation Talk featuring the president of Universal Television and panels with industry experts.

International Spotlight presentations will showcase episodes from countries including Egypt, France, the UK, Norway, Lithuania, and Mexico.

Aspiring independent creators can participate in the Pitch-A-Thon, where they can pitch their projects to top television executives.

SeriesFest passes are available starting at $135, while tickets for individual screenings cost $15.

The festival will culminate with a live performance by Amy Schumer & Friends at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, with tickets starting at $74.80.

Coinciding with these events is the celebration of Día del Niño, or Children’s Day, across Colorado from April 27.

Día del Niño originated in Mexico in 1925 and serves to honor children and promote their happiness and well-being in communities.

Across the Front Range, many cultural and artistic organizations will host family-friendly activities to celebrate.

At the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, there will be free general admission along with discounted planetarium showings and special performances.

The Denver Art Museum will offer free admission and bilingual activities, including hands-on art making and live performances by local and international artists.

Denver Zoo will host a bilingual event featuring animal demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, an art class, and musical performances.

Other participating institutions include the Denver Botanic Gardens, Clyfford Still Museum, Denver Public Library, and History Colorado, all providing free activities to engage families.

For those interested in cinema, a summer film series showcasing cult classics is set to take place at the Holiday Theater in Denver, with screenings on Sundays in May and June.

Films will include titles such as ‘Labyrinth,’ ‘Mamma Mia!,’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ among others.

Additionally, this weekend offers various cultural events and activities across Colorado.

On April 24, four solo exhibitions will open at Robischon Gallery in Denver, featuring works by local artists and running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On the following day, Desirae Brown’s exhibit ‘I Can Show You Better Than I Can Tell You’ opens at the Art Students League of Denver, available for viewing until May 31.

Various performances, including ‘Tinder Live!’ at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, and Sneaker Con at the Colorado Convention Center, will take place this weekend as well.
