Scrutiny Mounts for DC U.S. Attorney Ed Martin Over Undisclosed Media Appearances

Ed Martin, the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, is facing increased scrutiny over his failure to disclose numerous media appearances related to significant political events.

In a recent disclosure, Martin reported only 16 appearances during his tenure, stating, “Despite my searches, there may be other materials that I have been unable to identify, find, or remember.”

This situation has raised concerns among members of Congress, particularly amongst Democrats, over Martin’s relationships with foreign nations and his political biases.

Congressman Jamie Raskin voiced these concerns in a letter, noting, “The Congress of the United States and the American people deserve a full picture of Mr. Martin, his relationships to Russia, and his political loyalties.”

Raskin expressed alarm over Martin’s actions while serving as U.S. Attorney, accusing him of utilizing his position to threaten detractors of Elon Musk and to express strong allegiance to the businessman while criticizing Democratic lawmakers for their protected speech.

Raskin elaborated on Martin’s controversial actions, highlighting how he is purportedly dismissing career civil servants who earlier prosecuted January 6th crimes, and has shown a consistent failure to recuse himself from potential conflicts of interest.

Martin’s record includes participating in over 60 interviews in 2021 concerning the prosecutions of Capitol riot participants. While some of these appearances had no direct connection to Russia or Ukraine, he did speak out against U.S. involvement in Syria and dismissed the likelihood of a Russian invasion of Ukraine prior to the conflict that began in February 2022.

However, Raskin’s letter pointed out a notable occurrence; just 16 days after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Martin controversially suggested that Vladimir Putin might be viewed as a “hero.”

The White House, in apparent support of Martin, has labeled him as the “perfect leader to restore law and order.” In an official statement to the Washington Post, a White House representative asserted that “President Trump made a brilliant choice in selecting Ed Martin to serve a full, permanent term as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.”

Martin’s defenders claim he possesses a distinguished record of service and is well-equipped to tackle the challenges facing the nation’s capital.

Raskin, a Harvard Law alumnus with extensive experience in the judiciary, serves on the select committee that investigated the January 6th Capitol riot. In his correspondence, he pointed out that only three out of approximately 80 nominees from 2021 to 2014 had demonstrated similar failures to disclose their statements or writings.

These three nominees, however, had omitted no more than four items from their disclosures.

Raskin also highlighted that both media networks, where Martin appeared, have been described as critical elements in Russia’s propaganda and disinformation campaigns—issues that have garnered attention from various administrations across the political spectrum.

Due to the significance of these findings, the Senate Judiciary Committee has been urged to hold a hearing regarding Martin’s nomination, with calls for him to provide testimony under oath.

Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Dick Durbin emphasized the importance of this matter, stating, “We must take our constitutional duty of advice and consent seriously.”

While the FBI has acknowledged receiving Raskin’s letter, there has been no further comment from the agency. The Washington Examiner has also reached out to Martin for his perspective on the situation.
