Shooting Incident Involving Author Jillian Lauren Raises Questions Over Self-Defense

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) recently released footage of the shooting incident involving Jillian Lauren, a 51-year-old author and spouse of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner. This incident has ignited discussions about the circumstances surrounding Lauren’s actions and her justification for brandishing a firearm.

According to LAPD reports, Lauren allegedly mistook officers for armed suspects when she fired at them earlier this month. The event unfolded while officers were collaborating with the California Highway Patrol to locate three individuals involved in a hit-and-run incident.

Video footage compiled from body-worn cameras of LAPD officers along with surveillance footage reveals a moment of confusion before the shooting. The LAPD confirmed that Lauren, seen in a purple Weezer t-shirt and black tights, was spotted holding a gun while walking around her backyard in Eagle Rock.

Due to the proximity of a fence surrounding her property, the officers’ body camera footage was partially obstructed, but audio recordings captured the desperate commands of officers urging Lauren to drop her weapon. For several tense minutes, an officer called to her from the other side of the fence, insisting that she relinquish her gun.

“There were three men, and one of them shot her, and the cops are looking for him right now,” a neighbor reported during a 911 call, referring to the suspects.

The audio from the call indicated that Lauren believed she was under fire from the suspects, suggesting the confusion that could have led her to feel threatened. Security camera images from the area showed the hit-and-run suspects attempting to hide in nearby backyards.

In the moments before the shooting, the body camera audio captured officers warning Lauren that she risked being shot. A police officer could be heard saying, “Ma’am we’re trying to help you. Drop the gun, you’re going to get shot.”

Lauren appeared to react to the officers’ warnings when one officer alerted the others that she had raised her gun, indicating an escalation in the situation. Shortly after, another officer announced, “OK, she racked it,” which was soon followed by the sound of multiple gunshots.

After being shot, Lauren turned and staggered back toward her home, ending the video footage just after the shooting occurred. A neighbor, apparently at Lauren’s request, called 911 again to inform the dispatcher that Lauren had been shot at by three men.

In a panicked moment, Lauren could be heard in the background of the call, stating, “I had my gun, and he said: Put down that gun, put down that gun. I said put down your f—ing gun. Oh, and then he shot me.”

Despite the tragic events, Lauren remained inside her residence for an hour following the shooting before eventually confronting LAPD officers who had arrived.

Footage captured at the scene shows her lying on the ground as officers handcuffed her, noting her injuries from a gunshot wound to the arm. Emergency personnel transported her to a hospital for treatment where she was reported to be in stable condition.

Police recovered a Glock 9mm handgun along with a spent shell casing from Lauren’s home, further complicating the investigation. One of the men involved in the hit-and-run incident was initially detained but later released pending further investigation.

Although Jillian Lauren was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, she has since posted bail. As it stands, it remains unclear if the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has taken over the case, which will ultimately determine if formal charges are filed against her.

Lauren’s notoriety and the complex circumstances surrounding the shooting have fueled debate about whether her actions were a justified response to the perceived threat.

A bestselling author, Lauren is best known for her 2010 memoir, “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem,” which details her time in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei.

In 2023, she added to her accolades with the publication of “Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer,” a work derived from her interviews with serial killer Samuel Little.

Jillian Lauren is scheduled to make a court appearance at the end of the month as the situation continues to develop.
