Katie Layte, owner of Papercuts Bookshop, expressed the significance of independent bookstores, stating that they not only bolster local economies but also create waves of opportunities for authors and readers.
Similarly, Hannah Barrett, co-owner of Read My Lips, noted the nurturing and creative spirit within Greater Boston’s book community, highlighting the dedication of both booksellers and readers.

First up is Lovestruck Books, a romance bookstore and café-and-wine bar located in Harvard Square. On Indie Bookstore Day, Lovestruck Books will inaugurate its outdoor patio, allowing shoppers to enjoy the fresh air. In addition, customers can engage in a fun game of banned book bingo while sampling the ambiance.
Next, at Papercuts Bookshop in Jamaica Plain, the festivities include complimentary slices of gluten-free coconut-pineapple cake, courtesy of Odulce, a home bakery with a sweet story behind it—originating from the owner’s love story that began at the very shop. The store will also distribute exclusive stickers and magnets, designed by professional art print designer Larry Law, making this event extra special for attendees.
In Somerville, Side Quest Books & Games promises a celebration filled with fantastical elements and a focus on diversity. They will unveil new swag featuring graphics by local artists, as well as offer free Indie Bookstore stickers with every purchase.
Porter Square Books, with locations in both Cambridge and Boston’s Seaport, champions reading accessibility by sponsoring author visits and facilitating book donations in the community. This Independent Bookstore Day, they will hold a Stuffed Animal Portrait Fundraiser at their Cambridge location, inviting customers to bring their favorite stuffed friends to get illustrated portraits.
