Health Officials Warn of Potential Measles Exposure at Various Illinois Locations

Illinois health officials are alerting the public about potential exposures to a confirmed case of measles at several locations in the state.

The Illinois Department of Public Health identified seven sites where individuals could have been exposed to the virus between April 7 and April 15.

These locations include a restaurant, a fitness center, a grocery store, and several laundromats, all situated in Marion, IL.

Health authorities emphasized that anyone who visited these sites during the specified timeframe should reach out to their healthcare provider if they begin to display any symptoms of measles.

Despite the warnings, they reassured the public that the overall risk of contracting measles in Illinois remains low.

The confirmed measles case reported on Wednesday marks the state’s first instance of the disease in 2025, following a notable outbreak in Chicago in early 2024, which accounted for 67 cases.

The case was confirmed through laboratory testing in a patient located in far southern Illinois.

To date, no outbreak has been declared in the state as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

Locations with potential exposure include:

– Don Sol Restaurant, Marion IL
– Legacy Fitness, Marion IL
– Walmart, Marion IL
– Kroger Grocery, Marion IL
– Wonder Wash Laundry, Marion IL
– Easy Coin Laundry, Marion IL
– Small Star Laundry, Marion IL

Individuals who visited these establishments during the designated time period are urged to monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days from the date they may have been exposed.

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye, and a rash that typically begins at the head or face before spreading across the body.

IDPH noted that the risk of infection is significantly lower for those who are immune to measles, either through past infections or vaccination.

In light of this exposure, it is crucial for anyone exhibiting symptoms to inform their healthcare provider before seeking in-person medical attention to prevent further spread of the illness.

If patients need to be seen, healthcare facilities can implement the necessary precautions to isolate them and minimize exposure to others.

Illinois health officials reported a concerning outbreak currently affecting Texas and New Mexico, where over 680 confirmed cases and three fatalities have been documented, contributing to more than 800 cases across the nation.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, director of the IDPH, reiterated the importance of vaccination in preventing measles, highlighting that the disease can be effectively prevented with up-to-date vaccinations.

Most individuals receive their vaccinations during childhood, reducing the overall risk of transmission.

However, heightened awareness is necessary for vulnerable populations, particularly infants who typically receive their initial vaccine dose between 12 and 15 months of age.

Additionally, individuals unable to receive vaccinations for health reasons are also at increased risk.

Those who suspect they have been exposed are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider regarding immunity through previous vaccination or the need for a future vaccination to safeguard against measles.

The MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine is notably effective, with two doses providing a 97% success rate in preventing measles.

Illinois health officials recently introduced a Measles Outbreak Simulator Dashboard to evaluate the potential dynamics of an outbreak in schools based on vaccination data, enhancing preparedness for any possible measles incidents.
