Trump’s Popularity Declines Amid Growing Discontent Over Key Issues

Recent polling data indicates a significant decline in support for President Donald Trump among the American public, with alarming trends noted even among registered Republicans.

One survey revealed that a majority of respondents find Trump’s second term to be ‘scary,’ highlighting widespread concerns about his governance.

This discontent is particularly pronounced regarding his administration’s handling of the economy and immigration policies. A recent Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research survey found that only 24% of Americans believe Trump is focused on the right priorities during his presidency.

Moreover, more than half of voters approved of Trump’s performance as president, and majorities opposed his tariff strategies and the reduction of the federal workforce.

As Trump approaches the 100-day mark in his second term, dissatisfaction appears to be mounting rapidly. Voters seem fatigued by a term characterized by dramatic shifts, including upheavals in global financial markets and aggressive deportation practices, which have impacted even documented individuals.

Even within Trump’s own party, support for his priorities seems tepid.

According to the same Associated Press survey, just 54% of Republicans believe Trump is prioritizing the right issues. In contrast, a mere 9% of independent voters share this perspective, with 42% asserting he is focusing on the wrong issues.

Furthermore, overall approval ratings for Trump have languished at about 40%, including a disappointing 40% approval regarding his foreign policy, trade negotiations, and economic strategy.

A separate poll from the New York Times and Siena College further illustrates Trump’s declining popularity, with only 42% favorability overall, dropping to 29% among independent voters.

Significantly, more than half of those surveyed expressed concern that Trump is exceeding the powers granted to him, with 59% categorizing his second term as ‘scary.’

The numbers surrounding his economic performance depict a stark turnaround from his first term. Only 43% approve of Trump handling the economy, a dramatic decline from the 64% approval noted in April 2024 during his first term.

Voter discontent extends to his trade policies, with half of those surveyed expressing disapproval, while 61% believe that presidential authority should not include the ability to impose tariffs without congressional approval.

An additional 63% of respondents—40% of whom identify as Republicans—contend that a president should not be able to deport legal immigrants who have protested against Israel.

On immigration issues, a Washington Post-ABC-Ipsos poll highlights that 53% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s management, a significant shift from earlier this year when approval was more favorable.

Currently, approximately 90% of Democrats, 56% of independents, and 11% of Republicans disapprove of Trump’s immigration policies.

In an Associated Press survey released on Thursday, half of U.S. adults believed Trump’s trade policies would elevate prices significantly, with another 30% anticipating some degree of price increase.

Worries about a potential recession loom large as half of Americans express grave concerns regarding the economic outlook in the coming months.

Polling results from Fox News, typically seen as favorable to Trump, also reflect his declining support. Their survey reported a mere 38% approval on economic matters, with 56% expressing disapproval.

The same poll found that 58% of respondents disapproved of Trump’s overall performance, while 59% disagreed with his handling of inflation.

Only 30% of Americans believe that Trump’s policies are beneficial for the economy, with just 40% affirming that his policies will aid the country at large.

Among Generation Z—those born between 1995 and 2012—disapproval rates are particularly concerning.

An NBC Stay Tuned survey revealed that a striking 69% of Gen Z participants disapprove of Trump’s economic management and the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Many voiced challenges in affording basic necessities like rent and expressed worries regarding persistent inflation, reflecting a generational divide in support for the current administration.
