Houston is set to experience its hottest day of 2025 so far, with temperatures rising into the mid- to upper-90s, driven by a warm, southwesterly flow in the atmosphere and a compressing front making its way toward the city.
This weather spike feels particularly unfair for May, reminiscent of the sweltering days of August, especially as the city recorded a scorching 96 degrees last Wednesday at Bush Intercontinental Airport.
However, there is a silver lining; a weak front is expected to arrive late this afternoon or evening, bringing with it a chance of brief, scattered showers and thunderstorms.
As the sun sets, areas inland of Highway 59/Interstate 69 will likely see a drop in dewpoints to the 50s.
Although the air temperatures will remain warm, the reduction in humidity will provide some relief from the oppressive heat, with lows expected to fall into the upper 60s for communities further away from the coast.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, however, residents should brace for a quick return to sticky humidity.
By Wednesday afternoon, dewpoints will begin rising again south of I-10, spreading humidity inland by the evening.
Despite the mugginess, daytime temperatures should still hover around the mid-90s, accompanied by light northeast winds shifting to the southeast.
As night falls, temperatures are projected to dip into the low to mid-70s.
Thursday promises to continue the trend of high temperatures, with a forecast suggesting partly sunny skies and highs again in the mid-90s.
While there may be an unstable atmosphere aloft, the presence of a capping inversion limits the likelihood of rain, restricting chances to roughly 20%, primarily for areas south of Interstate 10.
Overnight lows on Thursday are expected to remain comfortably in the 70s.
Friday is forecasted as a hot and sunny day, with temperatures in the mid-90s continuing the summer-like trend.
The Memorial Day weekend looks to start similarly, with conditions mirroring those experienced on Friday.
However, the weather pattern shifts as the second half of the weekend approaches.
A weakening ridge of high pressure combined with a disturbed atmospheric pattern may invoke a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, with meteorologists predicting even better chances on Memorial Day itself, potentially hitting 50% or higher.
Daytime highs during this period should be slightly cooler, likely reaching only the lower 90s.
As for the week following Memorial Day, a more stable and wetter weather pattern is anticipated, paving the way for cooler and more seasonable May temperatures in the upper 80s.
With daily chances of showers and thunderstorms on the horizon, it seems residents will welcome any respite from the oppressive heat they’ve experienced today.
As Houstonians steel themselves for today’s scorching temperatures, the upcoming drier air will certainly come as a welcome change.
