TuYo Theatre to Premiere Immersive Play ‘La Llorona on the Blue Line’ in 2025

TuYo Theatre is set to unveil the world premiere of ‘La Llorona on the Blue Line,’ a breathtaking new immersive play written by Mabelle Reynoso, known for her previous works including ‘¡Lotería: Game On!’ and TuYo Theatre’s ‘Pastorela 2.0.’

Directed by TuYo Theatre’s co-artistic director Dr. Maria Patrice Amon, who has directed several noteworthy productions, including ‘Pásale Pásale’ and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s ‘Hoops,’ the play promises to be a significant addition to the cultural landscape of San Diego.

Scheduled to run from June 5 to June 21, 2025, with an official opening night on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the production will take place at the National City Depot, located at 922 W 23rd St, National City, CA 91950.

The play lasts for 60 minutes, captivating audiences aboard San Diego’s Blue Line trolley as it interweaves chilling stories across three distinctive eras: 1920, 1946, and 1982.

Audience members will be invited to step aboard vintage trains, where they will encounter the spectral presence of La Llorona, a figure who serves as both a monster and a mirror reflecting hidden truths and confronting injustice.

This immersive experience allows participants to engage with the haunting narratives, revealing how the past can linger and influence the present in unexpected ways.

Originally commissioned by TuYo Theatre in 2024, ‘La Llorona on the Blue Line’ challenges attendees to reflect on themes of memory, injustice, and the winding path of collective human experience.

The cast of the production features a diverse lineup of talented performers, including Nancy Batres as Freya/Female Passenger/Nurse Mary, Paloma Carrillo as Ceci/New Mother, and Vanessa Duron as Señora Torres/Mami/Lola.

La Llorona herself will be portrayed by Vanessa Flores, enriching the narrative with her performance, while Tash Gomez, Arturo Medina, and Julián Ortega Flores lend their talents in various roles, encompassing the multi-faceted characters that traverse the story.

The creative team supporting this ambitious work includes set designer Jesus Hurtado, costume designer Carmen Amon, sound designer Eliza Vedar, and prop designer Samantha Rojales, among others, ensuring a cohesive artistic vision for the production.

Choreography will be crafted by Tamara Rodriguez, with stage management led by assistant stage managers Abby Chacón, Ariadna Hernández, and Victoria Yvette Zepeda, who will ensure that the performance runs smoothly.

Tickets to attend ‘La Llorona on the Blue Line’ are currently on sale and can be purchased at TuYoTheatre.org.

In a notable element of TuYo Theatre’s philosophy, the organization has set a no minimum ticket price, reflecting its belief that art should be accessible to all, encouraging audiences to choose ticket prices that suit them.

As the premiere date approaches, anticipation builds for a production that not only seeks to entertain but also to provoke thought and dialogue about the haunting legacy of our past and the truths that emerge from it.
