Cyril Ramaphosa’s Diplomatic Mission to Washington Amidst Deteriorating U.S.-South Africa Relations

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to arrive in Washington this week as part of a critical effort to salvage the strained bilateral relationship between South Africa and the United States.

This move follows the implementation of a series of harsh policies by President Trump, including sanctions, that pose a considerable threat to South Africa’s already struggling economy.

Ramaphosa has been seeking a meeting with Trump since the early weeks of the administration when a suspension of all foreign assistance to South Africa was announced under an executive order.

This executive order accused the African National Congress (ANC)-led government of inciting violence against racially disfavored landowners and taking aggressive stances towards the U.S. and its allies.

The administration’s approach escalated tensions further when Trump promised to resettle Afrikaner landowners in the U.S., leading to the arrival of the first group of 50
