Three individuals who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center jail have been recaptured as authorities continue their manhunt for the remaining fugitives.
On May 26, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the capture of Lenton VanBuren Jr., 26, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Meanwhile, Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald were apprehended in Walker County, Texas, located just north of Houston, confirmed by the Louisiana State Police.
These recent arrests bring the total number of recaptured escapees to eight, leaving only two still at large: Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey.
Governor Jeff Landry praised the efforts of the Louisiana State Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety on social media, stating, “Excellent work.”
He cautioned the remaining fugitives, saying, “Antoine and Derrick — you are NEXT!”
A significant reward of $20,000 is still being offered for information that leads to the recapture of Groves and Massey.
The search for these escapees enters its second week, following the recapture of Corey Boyd on May 21, who was taken into custody in the 1400 block of Iberville.
Authorities have arrested 11 individuals suspected of aiding the escapees, and they have been booked as accessories after the fact.
VanBuren has a history of violence, being accused of a homicide that occurred in New Orleans East in 2021.
Donald faces multiple charges including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, obstruction of justice, and weapon-related offenses.
Tate was awaiting trial on charges related to burglary, narcotics, and weapon possession at the time of his escape.
The specifics surrounding the arrests of Tate and Donald in Texas have not yet been disclosed by law enforcement officials.
In Baton Rouge, police detained VanBuren after receiving an anonymous tip.
He was found sitting on a bench outside a department store on Hammond Avenue around 6:12 p.m.
Law enforcement is currently executing a search warrant at a hotel where VanBuren was believed to have been staying.
Murrill confirmed the details of VanBuren’s arrest in a social media post, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to recapture the remaining fugitives.
Since the mass breakout occurred shortly after midnight on May 16, there have been reports about the conditions that led to the escape.
Some family members of VanBuren have also been implicated in his escape, with several arrested on charges of facilitating his evasion from law enforcement.
Patricia VanBuren, 18, and Tyshanea Randolph, 27, were booked as accessories after the fact and had their bonds set at $1 million each.
According to court records, these women allegedly assisted VanBuren by bringing him to a relative’s residence in Magnolia, Mississippi.
Additionally, Lenton VanBuren Sr. and Angel McKey have also been charged as accessories.
This ongoing situation continues to develop, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
