Boston’s city government is ramping up its commitment to community safety through a comprehensive anti-violence strategy that has been developed over the past four months.
This initiative, informed by community leaders and resident meetings, aims to foster collaboration among various city departments, community organizations, and social service agencies during the summer and throughout the year.
Isaac Yablo, Wu’s senior advisor for community safety and director of the Boston Public Health Commission’s Office of Violence Prevention, emphasized the importance of a long-term plan, stating,
“We do an excellent job of responding to violence when it occurs and helping others recover from violence. But it’s not enough to only do that. We have to have a long-term plan.”
In the city, spikes in violence have historically been associated with summer months, as people spend more time outside, sometimes reigniting previous conflicts.
Cox explained that such dynamics can lead to unfortunate skirmishes, highlighting the need for a strategic approach to ensure community safety.
The focus of this initiative includes street safety, effective community policing, and funding for community events to create safer spaces for young people.
