North American Premiere of ‘Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)’ at American Repertory Theater

The American Repertory Theater is currently hosting the North American premiere of the charming British musical, “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),” by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan.

This delightful production, running through July 13, presents a multi-layered narrative that transcends the typical romantic comedy classification often associated with it.

Originally titled “The Season,” the musical first premiered six years ago in Ipswich and Northampton, England.

After a successful run in the West End, where it was renamed, the latest production opened at Kiln Theatre in 2023 before transferring to the Criterion Center in London’s West End in April 2024.

Set against the backdrop of Christmas, the story follows Dougal, a naive Brit played by Sam Tutty, who has just arrived in New York.

He’s in the city for the second wedding of a father he’s never met, creating a whirlwind of emotions and expectations.

At the airport, Dougal meets Robin, portrayed by Christiani Pitts, the bride’s sister, who is preoccupied with her own responsibilities and indifferent to Dougal’s arrival.

Despite her initial reluctance to show him around, Dougal’s earnest and endearing nature gradually breaks down her defenses.

Under the thoughtful direction of Tim Jackson, Tutty’s performance as Dougal exudes a heartfelt charm that keeps audiences rooting for him.

His optimistic outlook contrasts with the uncertainty surrounding his father’s presence, adding depth to his character.

Pitts delivers a compelling portrayal of Robin, a hardworking barista navigating her own uncertainties during this pivotal time for her family.

Together, they capture a unique chemistry that draws viewers into their evolving relationship.

The musical score, authored by Barne and Buchan, is a highlight of the production.

Both Tutty and Pitts deliver beautiful renditions of their numbers, with standout performances in tunes like “New York” and “Dad” by Tutty, and “Be Happy,” “He Doesn’t Exist,” and “This Year” by Pitts.

Their duets offer not only a narrative progression but also illustrate the depth of connection forming between the two characters.

Music Director Jeffrey Campos, who leads a talented seven-piece band, enhances the musical experience, making the music a vital aspect of the storytelling.

This production is characterized as a two-hander, but the set design by Soutra Gilmour takes on a notable supporting role.

Utilizing a revolving stage, Gilmour creatively transforms the initial airport baggage carousel into various locations in New York, including two differently styled hotel rooms, a coffee shop counter, and subway seats, showcasing versatility and imagination.

The costumes designed by Gilmour further capture the essence of both Dougal and Robin, adding layers to their characterization.

The 36-hour journey of the characters is skillfully delineated through the effective use of multi-purpose lighting by Jack Knowles, alongside the sound design crafted by Tony Gayle and Cody Spencer, which envelops the audience in the familiar sounds of a bustling city.

At its core, ‘Two Strangers’ tells an intimate story of friendship and potential love, exploring the profound ways in which two individuals can connect in a fleeting moment.
