Owen Wilson’s Journey into Golf and His New Role in ‘Stick’

Owen Wilson is making strides in his golf game, though he humbly acknowledges that he’s not quite on par with world No. 1 and fellow Dallas native, Scottie Scheffler.

His recent role in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy ‘Stick’ is helping to bridge his gap with the sport he once found intimidating.

Wilson, now 56, stars as Pryce Cahill, a former professional golfer faced with a midlife crisis.

The film, which is set to release on June 4, tells the story of Pryce, who, recently divorced, navigates a life filled with personal chaos.

His apartment, described as a nightmare for germaphobes, features an untidy kitchen and a murky swimming pool in the backyard, a stark contrast to the golfer he once was.

After a career derailment due to an infamous meltdown during a game, Pryce now spends his days as a charming salesman trying to sell expensive golf clubs.

But everything changes when he meets Santi, a young golf prodigy, who reinvigorates his passion for the sport.

Together, they embark on an inspiring journey toward the U.S. amateur championship, echoing the feel-good messages found in other Apple TV+ hits like ‘Shrinking’ and ‘Ted Lasso’.

Wilson believes that Pryce’s investment in Santi stems from his own feelings of being stuck in life, burdened by failures and devoid of wins.

He likens discovering Santi’s talent to finding a “lottery ticket” — the potential to mentor a future golf superstar akin to Tiger Woods.

He reflects on the powerful experience of recognizing greatness in youth and the impact of mentorship.

Having carved a successful acting career over several decades, Wilson highlights the unique aspects of the role and how it pushed him to learn the game of golf.

Growing up, he’d always been around golf due to his father’s prowess, but it remained an intimidating sport that he felt had passed him by.

When asked about his competitive nature while playing sports alongside his brothers, Luke and Andrew, Wilson responded that competition was part of their family dynamic.

His family frequently engaged in friendly matches, particularly putting competitions, and exchanged friendly bets.

Wilson possesses a spirited attitude toward competition; losing can be a tough pill to swallow, especially against his brothers, but the challenge adds to the fun.

He embraces the importance of caring about the game, indicating that he finds less enjoyment in playing with friends who lack a competitive edge.

When it comes to Texas cuisine, Wilson’s heart lies with Tex-Mex.

He highlights favorites like Mi Cocina and Joe T. Garcia’s in Fort Worth, indicating a recurring visit whenever he returns to Dallas, asserting that Mexican food would be his choice for a last meal.

Although he enjoys Slow Bone BBQ, he makes a light-hearted comparison to California Mexican food, which he feels doesn’t measure up to what Texas has to offer.

In readiness for future collaborations with his brother Luke, Wilson expressed interest in diving into Texas Monthly archives for movie material.

He mused about the possibility of creating a Texas or Dallas-based movie, contemplating the potential storylines.

As a devoted Cowboys fan, he sees opportunities for a unique narrative within the realm of Dallas football.

He envisions a coming-of-age story—drawing from his own memories and experiences in Dallas—that can capture the essence of his upbringing and the significance of the place he loves.

Through ‘Stick’, Wilson not only explores the challenges of life, golf, and mentorship but also offers a deeper glimpse into the unique culture of Dallas, which shaped him.
