The Unique Review Process for Nintendo Switch 2 Unveiled

Reviewing a new video game console often leads to an isolated experience. Typically, reviewers receive a device, connect it to their television, and play a range of games, often alone or with a limited number of others who also have the console.

That’s how Tom Warren and I approached the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X reviews back in 2020. However, the impending release of the Nintendo Switch 2 presents a distinct challenge that will necessitate a more collaborative effort.

Leading up to launch, everything about the Switch 2 has felt peculiar. Confusing messaging, steep pricing, and unfortunate tariff spikes have all contributed to an air of uncertainty.

In keeping with this eccentric atmosphere, Nintendo has decided not to distribute early review units to The Verge or other media outlets. Their reasoning stems from the necessity for day-one software updates, a departure from the process used with the original Switch.

So, what does this mean for The Verge’s review? The review process will unfold in an unconventional manner. Typically, a single comprehensive review is published first, followed by various articles that delve deeper into the console’s individual features—like new controllers, software innovations, and specific game experiences.

This time, our strategy will be slightly reversed. Several staff members at The Verge have placed preorders for the Switch 2, eager to get their hands on it as soon as possible. These team members are now tracking their shipments or preparing to stand in line to received their units tonight.

Once they have their consoles, the team will jump into writing detailed pieces that explore every element of the hardware. This will include insights into the interface, menu navigation, game updates, and even the peculiarities of how the cartridges taste.

Through this approach, we’ll gather a variety of experiences and perspectives that will enrich our overall coverage of the new console.

The full review of the Switch 2 will follow these initial explorations. As I sit at my dining room table, awaiting the console’s arrival, I plan to tune out all my incoming Slack notifications and Zoom meetings once it arrives. My focus will be on thoroughly testing all aspects of the console for an in-depth review.

Additionally, I will be reviewing Mario Kart World, the flagship title set to accompany the Switch 2. To do this justice, I’ll need sufficient time to immerse myself in both the console and the game.

As a result, my review of the Switch 2 and its premier game might not be available on launch day. In fact, readers should approach any early reviews with a degree of skepticism.

While this nontraditional approach may seem convoluted and could suggest a hurried review process, it actually bears several benefits. While I may sacrifice some immediacy, I gain the opportunity to experience the console in a real-world context.

This hands-on experience is particularly critical for assessing Nintendo’s new multiplayer-focused GameChat service, which stands as a key feature of the console. Testing this service in a solitary setting wouldn’t provide an accurate portrayal of what users will really experience.

Instead, I’ll be able to comprehensively assess what it’s truly like to engage in video chats with friends while enjoying the competitive thrill of Mario Kart.

In conclusion, the Nintendo Switch 2 marks a significant moment in the gaming landscape; it is the first major console launch in five years. While timely coverage is certainly an objective, the priority remains delivering a well-rounded and accurate depiction of what the device offers in everyday use.

Sometimes, these things require a little patience, and that’s precisely what we must embrace this time around.
