Rhiannon Giddens, an accomplished and versatile artist, continues to capture the attention of music lovers with her upcoming tour alongside The Old-Time Revue.
Giddens, a Pulitzer Prize-winning opera composer, is known for her remarkable skills on the banjo and viola. She was part of Beyoncé’s album “Cowboy Carter,” showcasing her talents to a broader audience.
Co-founding the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Giddens has also served as the artistic director for the innovative Silk Road Ensemble. As a solo artist, she passionately promotes vintage American roots music.
Demonstrating her collaborative spirit further, Giddens co-founded Our Native Daughters with fellow banjo players and singer-songwriters Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah, and Leyla McCalla.
Currently, Giddens is touring with The Old-Time Revue, a musical group that showcases the rich African-American string music traditions of Appalachia and expands upon them.
Their repertoire is diverse, mirroring influences from various genres—ranging from Cajun waltzes and traditional Congolese ballads to classics by Merle Haggard and lively hoedowns.
The band features an impressive lineup, including fiddler and co-founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Justin Robinson. Adding depth to the sound, multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell and his daughter Amelia also join the ensemble. Mainstays of the performance, bassist Jason Sypher and Giddens’ nephew, Justin “Demeanor” Harrington, who raps and plays banjo and percussion, complete the group.
This powerful collaboration is following the recent release of “What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow,” an evocative album highlighting rustic banjo and fiddle tunes—an homage to the Southern Black String Band traditions foundational to country music.
Concert-goers can expect the Old-Time Revue to draw from this album during their performances.
The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, at the Observatory North Park, located at 2891 University Avenue in North Park. Tickets are priced at $55 and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com.
In another part of the musical landscape, renowned bassist Dave Holland and Beninese guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke are set to join forces for a mesmerizing performance.
Hancock serves as a connection between these two talented artists. His rich legacy includes pivotal collaborations with Holland during their time with the legendary Miles Davis Quintet in 1968, a musical journey spotlighted on classic albums like “Files de Kilimanjaro,” “In a Silent Way,” and “Bitches Brew.”
Loueke, known for his prolific solo career with 17 albums, has been part of Hancock’s ensemble since 2005. Together, Holland and Loueke recorded “United,” an album that elegantly weaves jazz, funk, and West African musical styles.
Most tracks on the album were penned by Loueke, with the title song composed by Wayne Shorter. Every piece is a testament to the duo’s exceptional musical synergy, showcasing intricate melodic and rhythmic interactions.
Their concert, the first of its kind for these two artists, promises to be a master class in collaboration, emphasizing their ability to intertwine their respective talents and listen intently to one another.
Set for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16, the event will be held at the Athenaeum Jazz at the Scripps Research Auditorium, located at 10620 John Jay Hopkins Drive, La Jolla. Ticket prices range from $50 to $55, available at ljathenaeum.org.
Finally, the San Diego Troubadour publication is celebrating nearly 25 years of music coverage with a special benefit concert featuring Berkley Hart Selis Twang and singer-songwriter Tim Flannery.
Co-founders Liz Abbott and Kent Johnson have consistently delivered a successful platform dedicated to showcasing diverse musical narratives in the Southern California region.
In a highly anticipated reunion, the group, which comprises Jeff Berkely, Calman Hart, Eve Selis, and Marc “Twang” Intravia, will perform after a long hiatus since Selis’s move to Nashville in 2020.
The concert will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, located at 2020 Chestnut Avenue in Carlsbad. Tickets are priced at $20 for San Diego Folk Heritage members and $30 for the general public, available at sdfolkheritage.org.
