2024-25 Hawaii High School Athletic Season Sees Mixed Outcomes in State Championships

The 2024-25 Hawaii high school athletic calendar was marked by a blend of enduring traditions and shifting legacies, as several long-standing state championship streaks came to an unexpected end while others persevered through intense competition.

Among the most renowned of these streaks is Punahou’s formidable presence in tennis. The girls’ team captured its 21st consecutive title, while the boys’ team extended its dominance with a fourth straight victory. However, this season also witnessed a remarkable end to one of the state’s longest-standing winning streaks, as the Punahou girls’ cross country team, champions since 2012, fell to Radford, marking the conclusion of an impressive 11-title run.

Several other noteworthy championship runs also came to a close. Iolani’s girls basketball dynasty, which had secured five consecutive titles, was halted, as was the three-year reign of Kahuku in football and Saint Louis in boys basketball. Additionally, Pearl City ended a five-year championship streak for Moanalua in both boys and girls judo, further shaking up the competitive landscape.

In contrast to these historic endings, the season was also characterized by significant achievements from a number of schools that garnered their first-ever state titles. Kauai High made history by claiming the first state air riflery championship for any KIF team, breaking new ground for the program. Likewise, Kamehameha-Maui celebrated a milestone by winning its inaugural state football championship at the Division II level, having previously finished as a runner-up in 2023.

Seabury Hall made its mark by capturing its first boys basketball championship at the Division II level. The Moanalua boys and Konawaena girls also celebrated their first track and field championships in program history, contributing to a season defined by breakthroughs. Hawaii Prep’s girls cross country team raised its first banner in Division II, further expanding the list of newly crowned champions.

In a landmark achievement, Campbell claimed victory in the inaugural girls flag football championship, while Radford boys volleyball celebrated its title win in Division II, contributing to the diversity of successful programs this season.

On the other hand, Punahou’s storied swimming and diving programs continued their unrivaled success by celebrating their 57th overall state girls title and the 50th for the boys team. Furthermore, the program’s boys tennis team has accumulated a remarkable 52 state titles, and the girls’ team follows closely with 49.

Milestones were also reached as Kamehameha girls volleyball captured its 25th championship title and Punahou boys volleyball marked its 40th.
