Evergreen High School Bids Farewell as New Campus Nears Completion

The Evergreen High School community gathered on June 14th for an emotional Final Farewell day as the campus prepares to close its doors for the last time.

Alumni, including those from the class of 1969, returned to reminisce and reconnect with old friends before the beloved campus is demolished.

The new Evergreen High School is under construction just east of the current site and is set to open in the fall of the coming academic year.

High school serves as a vault of memories for many individuals, and walking the familiar paths can trigger a flood of nostalgia.

“Those three years were not just formative and foundational, they were fundamental to who I am today,” reflected one alumnus.

A notable moment he recalled was speaking on behalf of Eldridge Cleaver’s candidacy in 1968.

He also reminisced about honing his photography skills, learning to write better through the school newspaper, Timberlines, and the annual, Forester, while covering various sports events.

Furthermore, he mentioned that he even wrote an oration on the government cover-up of UFO information during a speech class.

This nostalgia resonated with many attendees who shared similar experiences and friendships that blossomed during their years at Evergreen High.

As the day unfolded, representatives from Highline Public Schools shared important updates about the future of the school.

Among the announcements, they confirmed that a ribbon-cutting ceremony and self-guided tours of the new campus are scheduled for October, with further details to be provided at highlineschools.org/keepingourpromise.

In a show of respect for the past, plans are in place to salvage memorials from the current property.

The memorial for Jernes Schaub will be reinstalled on the outdoor learning stairs that overlook the central courtyard, and the plaque for Josie’s Corner, honoring a former cheerleader, will find a new home facing a built-in seating area in the south courtyard that leads into athletic spaces.

Looking ahead, the original Evergreen High School buildings are set to be demolished following the relocation of teaching materials and salvaged items to the new facility later this month.

The site will then be transformed with new synthetic-turf softball and baseball fields and a new main entrance driveway, already under construction just east of the existing main entrance.

The original gym’s bleachers will find a place in the new main gym, hanging on walls with their iconic EHS light tan color visibly integrated among green and gold acoustic panels.

Additionally, the existing gym center is slated for installation on the wall of the new gym, further preserving the legacy of the old school.

Regarding artwork and signage, the Highline Heritage Museum is exploring the opportunity to salvage large painted plywood murals from the existing gym, including the fight song and painted Wolverine.

However, due to size and weight concerns, the museum has declined the wood welcome sign.

Former students, including an alum from the class of 1987 who gifted the sign, have expressed interest in salvaging it if an appropriate location, such as the garden or inner courtyard areas, can be established.
