Juneteenth Celebrations Across Utah in 2025

As Juneteenth approaches, various communities across Utah are preparing to honor this significant holiday with a range of celebrations and events. This year, the festivities will be held in different locations, providing opportunities for education, connection, and celebration of African American culture and history.

One of the key events will take place at The Gateway in Salt Lake City, featuring a vibrant celebration filled with activities. Attendees can look forward to a Black-owned business expo, roller skating, a Black art gallery, live entertainment, and a variety of kids’ activities. To partake in these festivities, tickets are free but must be reserved ahead of time. The celebration is scheduled for noon to 10 p.m. on Juneteenth.

Additionally, the University of Utah’s Center for Community & Cultural Engagement will host a special event themed “And Still We Rise.” This gathering, open to the public and free of charge, will feature a panel discussion that includes notable speakers such as Rep. Sandra Hollins, Betty Sawyer, Dr. William A. Smith, and Robert Burch. Emma Houston, assistant vice president for community engagement at the University of Utah, emphasized the importance of celebrating Juneteenth and the freedom it represents for Black Americans. This event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at the J. Willard Marriott Library in Salt Lake City.

Utah State University is also joining the celebratory efforts with a free barbecue event, welcoming students, faculty, staff, and community members to Bridger Park in Logan. This gathering aims to honor Juneteenth with activities that combine education and enjoyment, including African drumming and live storytelling. The barbecue will run from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Juneteenth.

Millcreek will host its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration, featuring an array of performances by groups such as the SLC Mass Choir, Ngoma y’ Africa Drummers, The Feel Goodz, and local skate legends. The event will also showcase a fashion show and an art gallery, as well as a selection of food trucks to cater to attendees. This vibrant celebration is set for 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at Millcreek Common Plaza.

Another educational event will be the Buffalo Soldier ceremony, which focuses on the first all-Black units in the U.S. Army. Attendees will hear from guest speaker Bobby McDonald and witness a wreath-laying ceremony led by Betty Sawyer. This event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at the Fort Douglas Military Museum in Salt Lake City.

Celebration does not stop there, as the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City will host an event titled “Fighting for Freedom,” offering sweet potato pie and tours of Smithsonian poster exhibits. This event will feature a conversation with PBS Utah hosts Danor Gerald and Lonzo Liggins, focusing on African American history and culture. It is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Juneteenth.

Lastly, for those seeking a moment of reflection and community, a Juneteenth reconciliation and healing vigil will be held at the International Peace Gardens. Scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, this event invites participants to come together in prayer for peace, progress, and healing.

As Utah communities commemorate Juneteenth, these events provide essential opportunities for education, reflection, and celebration of a pivotal moment in American history.
