In a bold military operation, the U.S. military struck three nuclear facilities in Iran early Sunday, a move that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described as one that “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The operation, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer” by the Trump administration, involved the deployment of stealth B-2 bombers, among more than 125 aircraft participating in the mission.
According to officials, the strikes targeted significant nuclear facilities located at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan in Iran.
Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed his support via social media, stating he had long maintained that this was the correct move.
In a similar vein, Republican Senator Dave McCormick hailed the decision, emphasizing the imperative of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
“This targeted attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities is the result of the Iranian regime’s failure to make a deal despite months of President Trump’s good faith efforts to negotiate,” McCormick said.
He praised President Trump’s leadership and noted the importance of ensuring that the world’s largest state sponsor of terror does not obtain a nuclear weapon while commending the U.S. military for successfully accomplishing the mission.
However, not all state officials shared this sentiment.
Democratic State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta criticized the bombing as a betrayal, pointing out that President Trump had campaigned on a promise to end endless wars.
Similarly, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional district, condemned the bombings as “unacceptable,” highlighting that such military actions should have required congressional approval.
Congressman Dwight Evans refrained from directly commenting on the military action but shared a statement from Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Leader of the U.S. House, who warned that the bombings had dramatically increased the risk of war.
In contrast, Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick described the decision to strike as “the right call,” indicating his support for the operation.
Meanwhile, fellow Republican Congressman Rob Bresnahan opted for a more cryptic response, posting an image of the American flag on social media in reaction to the bombings.
The responses extended beyond Pennsylvania’s borders, impacting local politics in neighboring New Jersey as well.
Democratic New Jersey Representative Mikie Sherrill voiced her agreement with Scanlon’s concerns regarding the need for congressional oversight of such military actions.
On the other hand, Republican gubernatorial candidate for New Jersey, Jack Ciattarelli, expressed his approval of the military strike, calling it “the right move.”
As of Sunday morning, some prominent local officials, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, have yet to publicly comment on the bombings, but NBC10 is actively gathering more information.
Officials expect that further statements and reactions will continue to develop as the situation evolves.
