Man Charged Following Vandalism Spree Targeting Portland Tea Shop

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man has been charged after allegedly vandalizing a North Portland tea shop, Auntea Ha, on two separate occasions within 48 hours.

The incidents took place on June 18 and 19, during which the suspect reportedly used a rock and a knife-sharpening stone to break windows at the establishment located near North Interstate Avenue and North Emerson Street.

According to Portland police, the investigation revealed that the same individual threw a rock through the shop’s window on June 19.

On June 18, he facilitated similar destruction by smashing the glass door with a different object, leading to serious concern from the shop owner, who indicated fear for their safety.

The owner stated, “We are too scared to come back because we’re always worried that he may really use his gun to shoot us,” referencing a threat made by the suspect.

In court documents, it was noted that the suspect, Clarida, admitted to exhibiting stalking behavior towards the tea shop, claiming that “Chinese people are ruining his life.”

Auntea Ha shared surveillance footage on Instagram that appears to show a man breaking the glass in front of their location and subsequently walking away from the scene.

Police further identified Clarida as a suspect in additional incidents, including throwing unlit Molotov cocktails and breaking windows at a home located near Southeast 6th Avenue and Southeast Nehalem Street.

During their response to the home on June 19, officers were informed that a rock had also been thrown through a window there, raising alarms about the safety of the residents.

The affected woman expressed her anxiety, stating, “It kind of scared me a lot because I can’t even go downstairs to my living room anymore because I’m afraid of getting a rock to my head.”

Clarida confessed to creating these “flammable firebombs,” which he reportedly threw at the house, indicating a desire to be left alone from the people he referred to as ‘Chinese people.’.

Facing a total of 22 charges, Clarida’s offenses include first and second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree disorderly conduct, and bias crime in the second degree, in addition to unlawful possession and manufacture of a destructive device.

A neighbor of the woman who was targeted expressed relief that the suspect was no longer a threat.

“We were in fear; I think there were several people in the building that were in fear,” she remarked.

She added, “I feel relieved, and I feel relieved for everybody who is being affected by it.”

In addition to the vandalism at Auntea Ha, multiple vehicles parked nearby also suffered broken windshields, though Clarida has not been linked to those incidents at this time.

Portland police are encouraging anyone with further information or video footage of the incidents to reach out via email at [email protected], referencing case number 25-162025.

Clarida has been ordered to have no contact with the victims and is scheduled for a preventative detention hearing on June 26.
