Chilly Weather and Windy Conditions Expected in New England

As a strong Canadian high-pressure system sets in for New England, residents can expect a chilly Wednesday morning followed by mostly clear skies throughout the day.

After a clear night, temperatures will remain in the upper 40s to low 50s during the morning commute, while patches of fog might linger in northern and western areas.

This cold air mass will dominate the region, keeping afternoon highs in the low 60s despite abundant sunshine and clear skies.

Winds will be a significant factor throughout the day, with gusts reaching between 20 to 40 miles per hour, particularly in Boston and along the coastline.

If you have evening plans, it’s wise to dress warmly as temperatures are expected to drop quickly after sunset.

In Boston, the temperature may cool to the upper 40s, while northern and western areas could see the mercury dip into the mid to upper 30s, with some locations even experiencing temperatures below freezing.

The arrival of this high-pressure system will provide cool and crisp weather across the entire region, ensuring that most of New England enjoys mostly sunny conditions.

The persistent northerly wind associated with this high-pressure system is expected to contribute to a well-organized weather pattern that will keep Hurricane Humberto, situated in the Northern Atlantic, safely away from the coast.

However, the strong winds will be felt throughout the day, with consistent speeds around 15 mph and notable gusts between 20 and 40 mph particularly along coastal southern New England.

This wind will enhance the cooling effect of an already brisk autumn day.

Coastal alerts remain active along the entire New England coastline due to Hurricane Humberto drifting eastward several hundred miles offshore, leading to small craft advisories and rip current statements in effect.

Waves along the shore are expected to reach heights of 5 to 10 feet, posing a warning for beachgoers and boaters alike.

For those in Greater Boston, prepare for a cool, crisp, and windy day, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s.

The wind will be particularly notable, averaging around 15 mph with gusts between 20 and 30 mph.

In Southeastern Massachusetts, expect mostly sunny conditions with temperatures also reaching the upper 50s and low 60s, and similar breezy conditions with gusts again between 20 and 30 mph.

Moving to Central and Western Massachusetts, sunshine will dominate with highs ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s, while a lighter breeze of 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts north of 20 mph, will provide a pleasant outdoor experience.

The Cape and Islands will see temperatures in the mid to upper 50s under predominantly sunny skies and breezy conditions, with winds ranging from 15 to 20 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph in some areas.

Rhode Island will remain sunny, with temperatures nearing 60 degrees and winds blowing between 10 and 15 mph, producing gusts similar to those of Massachusetts.

In New Hampshire, conditions will be sunny and cool, with highs reaching the upper 50s to low 60s and winds in the 10 to 15 mph range, with gusts approaching 20 mph at times.

Lastly, Vermont and Maine will enjoy sunny weather as well, with temperatures from the mid-50s to low 60s, accompanied by a light breeze between 10 to 15 mph, becoming slightly windier along the coastline where gusts may exceed 25 mph.

As September comes to a close, residents are reminded that the final day of the month hit mid-70s at Boston Logan Airport, resulting in an average daily high that exceeds half a degree above the norm for the month.
