The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has ceased its protective services for former Vice President Kamala Harris following significant discontent within its ranks, as officers had been diverted from vital crime suppression duties.
The LAPD’s Metropolitan Division had been assisting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in securing Harris’s Brentwood residence until Saturday morning when the protection was discontinued.
In the wake of President Donald Trump revoking Harris’s Secret Service protection last week, both California police agencies had hastily made arrangements to safeguard her.
While President Biden had previously extended her security beyond the typical six-month duration post-office, the recent developments prompted a quick response from local law enforcement.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass directed the LAPD to provide temporary security support to assist the CHP, which drew officers away from crucial crime-related activities in the San Fernando Valley.
Jennifer Forkish, the LAPD’s communications director, confirmed the arrangement was meant to ensure there would be no gap in security for Harris until a more permanent solution was finalized.
