In a bold move, the New York City Council has overridden Mayor Eric Adams’ veto of a legislative package aimed at protecting grocery delivery drivers, making the city the first in America to expand its minimum wage mandate for app-based delivery workers to this sector.
The package includes several measures, notably mandating a 10-percent tipping option during the ordering process and requiring that delivery drivers be paid within seven days of the end of a pay period.
Originally set at $19.96 per hour in 2023, the minimum wage rate for grocery delivery drivers will rise to $21.44. Mayor Adams had previously supported a similar wage increase for restaurant delivery workers, but he reversed course this time, cautioning against further raising grocery prices in a time of high inflation.
