As summer draws to a close, Staten Island public school students are preparing for their return to the classroom with the first day of school set for Thursday, September 4, 2025.
With the school year beginning soon, parents are reminded to stock up on last-minute school supplies to ensure their children are ready for the academic challenges ahead.
Looking ahead, the Staten Island school calendar reveals that students will have their last day of school on Friday, June 26, 2026, marking a full academic year packed with educational opportunities.
The New York City Department of Education has crafted the academic calendar to include a variety of days off for religious observances and breaks throughout the year.
Among the holidays that students will observe are Good Friday, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Fitr.
Additionally, there are scheduled week-long breaks for winter recess, mid-winter recess, and spring recess that coincide with Christmas and Passover celebrations.
Notably, the school calendar has also added Diwali as a public school holiday, recognizing the importance of this celebration in the community.
Other important breaks include Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth.
Parents should also take note of the scheduled days for parent-teacher conferences that will help foster communication between families and schools.
Here’s a breakdown of key dates to remember for the 2025-2026 school year:
**September 2025**
September 4 will kick off the school year with the first day of classes.
Later in the month, September 11 will feature evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers.
Middle schools and D75 schools will hold their evening Parent-Teacher Conferences the following week on September 18.
Students will have days off on September 23-24 as schools close for Rosh Hashanah, a significant Jewish holiday.
The month wraps up with evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K–12, and 6–12 schools scheduled for September 25.
**October 2025**
October will also observe several important days off, starting with schools closing for Yom Kippur on October 2.
On October 13, students will have another day off for Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
A new holiday on the calendar, Diwali, will see schools closed on October 20, celebrating this important cultural occasion.
**November 2025**
November begins with schools closed for Election Day on November 4.
Parents should mark November 6 for afternoon and evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools, during which students will be dismissed three hours early.
Veterans Day will be observed on November 11 with schools closed.
Middle schools and D75 schools will hold their Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 13, also resulting in an early dismissal for students.

The specific dates for Regents exams and a day for professional development will be announced later, with no classes for high school and 6-12 school students on these days.
**February 2026**
February brings a mid-winter recess from February 16-20, providing another break for students and families.
**March 2026**
March is highlighted by numerous Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary, middle, and high schools, with important early dismissal schedules on designated days.
Schools will observe a day off on March 20 for Eid al-Fitr.
**April 2026**
Spring recess will take place from April 2-10.
**May 2026**
May will include several evenings dedicated to Parent-Teacher Conferences across grade levels, as well as closures for Memorial Day on May 25 and Eid al-Adha on May 27.
**June 2026**
As the school year nears its end, June will see an important closure on June 4 for Anniversary Day/Chancellor’s Conference Day focused on staff development.
Regents exams will be scheduled for later in June, and schools will also close on June 19 for Juneteenth.
Finally, students can prepare for the last day of classes on June 26, 2026, marking the end of another fulfilling year in education.
