Exploring Joyful Dining Experiences This Holiday Weekend

As the long holiday weekend approaches, many people are grappling with complex feelings regarding the current state of the country. Amidst sentiments of anger, trouble, and a commitment to progressive values, finding time to rest and enjoy the simple pleasures of life is essential. In that spirit, here are three dining experiences that have recently brought joy to those seeking comfort and satisfaction through food and drink.

**Bar Benjamin: A Culinary Haven**

Bar Benjamin, located in Hollywood, presents a delightful atmosphere that is both posh and inviting. Soon after it opened early last summer, the bar became a hot spot. On one visit, eager to grab a couple of unreserved seats, guests found themselves put on a waitlist and directed to the Moon Room bar upstairs. Although initially feeling lonely, the ambiance was soon improved when the Moon Room was rebranded as Bar Benjamin, showcasing the same elegant Art Deco design as the restaurant below.

The rebranding has led to the creative expertise of bartenders Chad Austin and Jason Lee. Lee, renowned for his inventive cocktails, previously gained attention for his unique combinations at n/soto and Baroo. At Bar Benjamin, he and Austin craft cocktails that pay homage to the diverse cuisines of Los Angeles.

Among their innovative drinks, the Last Laugh stands out, combining mezcal with saffron, pineapple, bell pepper, and mango for a refreshing sip. Another intriguing offering is a play on the popular Iranian stew fesenjoon, featuring pomegranate liqueur and walnut-rice orgeat, introducing a dessert-like sweetness to the cocktail experience. For patrons who appreciate classic martinis, Ben’s Martini offers a lemony twist and pairs perfectly with small plates like beef tartare and dilled shrimp salad in a brioche bun.

Even on a weeknight when the crowd was lively, the intimacy of Bar Benjamin created a feel-good atmosphere, ideal for unwinding and enjoying a great meal.

**Fusion Kitchen: A Taste of Eastern Europe**

For those looking for comfort in a bowl, Fusion Kitchen in Mid-Wilshire serves up a light, summery version of borscht, a staple Eastern European dish that will surprise and delight. The borscht features tender chunks of stewed tomato, grated beets, and carrot in a broth that invites a dash of sour cream. Served alongside toasted rye bread and slices of salo, or salt pork, this dish represents the essence of Ukrainian fare.

Previously known as the second location of Mom, Please, Fusion Kitchen retains its roots while elevating traditional offerings. After writing about Moldovan dishes at Noroc in Sacramento, the writer discovered a newfound craving for Eastern European flavors, making Fusion Kitchen’s menu particularly enticing.

Strong recommendations extend beyond borscht. The cabbage rolls impress with their delicate wrappers filled with minced beef and vegetables, while the potato-filled varenyky and pelmeni, adorned with mushroom sauce, are a must-try. For dessert, the medovic, or honey cake, dazzles with its sour cream frosting and the essential sweet-smokiness of burnt honey, despite not having the numerous layers found in other famous recipes.

**Manila Inasal: Celebrating Filipino Flavors**

Dining at Manila Inasal means indulging in a range of modern takes on classic Filipino dishes. During one visit, the server noted that the bungus inasal, or marinated and grilled milkfish, is the signature dish, prompting an immediate correction in the dining choices. Featuring aachiote for flavor and marinated with lemongrass, ginger, and calamansi juice, the bungus is served with two dipping sauces, enhancing the experience.

Starting with appetizers such as lumpia or laing, the restaurant’s take on coconut-cream-taro leaf makes for a flavorful introduction. The pancit, consisting of egg and vermicelli noodles mingled in a umami-rich soy-based sauce, provides a satisfying touch.

While meat dishes such as kare kare, with tender cuts of beef, and lechon offer a hearty finish, they could pack more flavor to stand out against competitors. As Manila Inasal continues to settle into its new Silver Lake Plaza location, there’s hope that the flavors will sharpen over time.

As we reflect on the experiences available this long holiday weekend, these dining spots all offer unique flavors and joyful atmospheres that can help us regroup. Whether seeking comfort in creative cocktails or exploring diverse culinary traditions, the journey through food can be restorative and uplifting.
