As a seasoned travel writer with multiple Alaskan cruises under my belt, I recently embarked on a new adventure with Holland America’s Denali Cruisetour package, expanding my perspective beyond traditional round-trip itineraries from Seattle or Vancouver.
This latest experience began aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam in Vancouver, charting a course through Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. The journey included blissful sea days punctuated by breathtaking views of Glacier Bay National Park and College Fjord, culminating in a landing at Whittier.
What followed was an expansive land segment at the Holland America Denali Lodge, where our D2C 11-Day Signature Denali package offered three nights of immersive experiences.
Upon disembarking in Whittier, we caught an early morning train aboard the McKinley Explorer, just a stone’s throw from the port.
This domed coach train, known for its scenic views, allowed us to settle into our pre-booked seats on the second level while enjoying 360-degree panoramas during the eight- to nine-hour ride north to Denali.
Culinary delights were provided onboard with breakfast and lunch served in a cozy dining area below, leaving ample time for passengers to roam about and fully take in the picturesque wilderness.
Darling details included knowledgeable staff narrating captivating stories related to the route, as well as the option of light refreshments being available throughout the trip.
Our first recognizable destination was Talkeetna, followed by Anchorage, where we traveled at a leisurely pace of up to 60 mph against the backdrop of stunning landscapes.
We passed by the memorable home of Shannon Cartwright, a children’s book illustrator known for her analog methods, which contributed a unique story to our journey.
On arrival at Denali, a swift bus ride took us to the Holland America Denali Lodge, strategically situated along the breathtaking Nenana River.
Occupying a sprawling campus that starts atop a hill and descends to the river, the lodge features multiple accommodation options and a vibrant center known as Denali Square.
Denali Square is home to Karsten’s Public House, serving up Alaskan comfort cuisine such as beer-battered halibut, craft brews, and a breakfast buffet that kept our group energized for the excursions ahead.
For guests longing for a more upscale experience, the Main Lodge’s Canyon Ridge Grill presents dishes reminiscent of the ship’s Pinnacle Grill, not to mention irresistible regional twists.
Room service options invite a relaxing retreat with pizzas delivered to our porch, while dining in the Square offers communal meals at The Music of Denali Dinner Theater, presenting Alaska’s history with a delightful musical twist.
Shuttles traversed the lodge campus effortlessly, ensuring easy access to various points of interest.
Additionally, numerous foot trails invite exploration along the river and up to the Main Lodge, while the Denali National Park Visitors’ Center is conveniently just a mile away, serviced by a quick shuttle.
The park’s strict regulations mean personal vehicles aren’t allowed beyond Mile 15, ensuring an exclusive experience through private outfitters and approved tour buses for those eager to discover the Tundra Wilderness Tour.
This captivating five- to six-hour narrated tour dives deep into the park’s wildlife and scenery, going as far as Mile 43 when accessible.
Despite the unpredictable visibility of Mount Denali, our skilled naturalist guide navigated us to prime viewing spots, allowing us brief glimpses of the majestic peak amidst passing clouds, and moments whereby we marveled at grazing Dall sheep, caribou, and elusive moose.
With an array of excursions available for all ages, the Denali Lodge proves to be a versatile multi-generational vacation spot, accommodating everything from zip-lining and fishing to ATV adventures and serene hikes.
After an enriching three nights at the Denali Lodge, we began our return journey via motorcoach to Anchorage.
This six-hour ride, steeped in comfort and scenic narration, took us through Wasilla with a pause at Settlers Bay Lodge for a delicious buffet lunch, giving us time to stretch and reflect on our experiences.
Upon concluding our journey, we were dropped off for an overnight stay at the Hilton Anchorage before our flight, but couldn’t resist the opportunity to join the Anchorage Trolley Tours.
This evening ride through the city offered insights into the region’s rich history, including the devastation of the 1964 earthquake.
Traveling through both land and sea, Holland America’s Denali Cruisetour package provided the ultimate blend of exploration, perfectly balancing the serene beauty of Glacier Bay and the rugged majesty of Denali National Park.
This experience accommodated everyone and emphasized Alaska’s allure, making it a not-to-be-missed adventure for travelers of all ages.
