Candidates will need a robust background in television audio setup and execution, applicable both for studio and field productions. Additionally, flexibility in scheduling is paramount, as this role may require early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays to accommodate the demands of live news broadcasting.

The job responsibilities encompass directing live local newscasts, managing taped special programs, and executing special event broadcasts. Utilization of the Ross Overdrive production system is central to this role, ensuring high-quality content delivery consistently.

Individuals applying for this position will be tasked with operating and managing advanced broadcast equipment, which includes video switchers, audio consoles, and graphics systems. Close collaboration with producers, camera operators, audio technicians, and other team members is essential to realize the directorial vision and meet production goals effectively.

Creativity is also a critical component of this position, as the selected candidate will be expected to contribute innovative ideas to enhance the visual appeal of broadcasts. This includes suggesting optimal camera angles, improving shot composition, and integrating graphic elements to elevate the viewer’s experience.

An effective Television Director/Stage Manager must possess the ability to swiftly identify and rectify technical issues that arise during live broadcasts. Such responsiveness is crucial to maintaining the highest broadcast standards and minimizing any downtime.

Communication skills are imperative for this role. The director must engage effectively with on-air talent, production staff, and various stakeholders to ensure a polished and cohesive final product.

Furthermore, the fast-paced and dynamic nature of television production, particularly during breaking news events, necessitates a director who can demonstrate flexibility and adaptability under pressure.

To qualify for this opportunity, candidates should have a strong production background specifically in news broadcasting and local programming. A minimum of five years’ experience as a Director or Technical Director is required. Candidates must be adept at collaborating with News Producers, Program Producers, and studio crew personnel in a demanding, automated production environment.

Preferred qualifications include familiarity with video and audio servers, as well as graphics systems. Experience in setting up microphones, pre-fades, IFBs, and other necessary equipment for live studio and field productions will be advantageous.

Ideal candidates will be self-starters with strong organizational skills, capable of managing the many nuances that come with the territory of television production.

Education requirements consist of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, with a preference for degrees in TV Communications or Journalism.

The position is covered under the Company’s collective bargaining agreement with the Directors Guild of America (DGA). It is noted that this role is on-site, meaning that employees will work from a designated company location on an ongoing basis.

The Chicago, IL location is an exciting venue for this role, with a pay rate of $60.80 per hour.
