On July 15, Michelin unveiled a notable list of 14 new entries to its New York restaurant guide, highlighting establishments that have caught the attention of inspectors and are in contention for potential awards later this year.
This announcement marks the ongoing process of introducing new culinary spots to the guide, which already features hundreds of recognized restaurants. The newly added restaurants are categorized as ‘recommended’ and are known for giving inspectors a positive first impression, indicating their eligibility for higher Michelin awards such as stars in the future.
One of the standout additions is Kabawa, a Caribbean tasting menu restaurant led by Paul Carmichael, a veteran of Momofuku. Since its debut in spring, Kabawa has received accolades for its sophisticated three-course tasting menu and stylish dark green dining room, which embraces subtle regional references to the Caribbean.
The list also features two Thai establishments that have garnered attention: Hungry Thirsty, a new spot in Carroll Gardens helmed by a team of Ugly Baby alumni, and Glin Thai Bistro, a one-year-old Fort Greene restaurant that has impressed inspectors with its distinct offerings crafted from high-quality ingredients, maintaining a genuine Thai ambiance.
Additionally, several Brooklyn spots made the cut, including Café Kestrel from Red Hook, Taqueria El Chato in Greenpoint — the brainchild of the now-closed Aldama team — Enso in Williamsburg which specializes in traditional edomae-style omakase, 6 Restaurant with its intimate six-seat tasting counter, and Mango Bay, a revamped Caribbean eatery led by chef London Chase, noted for its inviting atmosphere ideal for gatherings with friends.
Yemenat, a Yemeni restaurant based in Bay Ridge, also achieved recognition for its well-prepared lamb haneeth and shakshoka Adeni, bringing a taste of Yemen to the table.
In Manhattan, inspectors were favorable toward Joomak, a West Village restaurant led by chef Jiho Kim, recognized as the second version of his previous one-Michelin-star establishment, Joomak Banjum.
Also included is Adda, the newly relocated Indian restaurant from Unapologetic Foods, a group known for acclaimed ventures such as Semma and Dhamaka. Other notable mentions are Maison Passerelle, the elegant French restaurant from chef Gregory Gourdet situated inside the luxury department store Printemps, and Papa San, a dynamic Peruvian and Japanese eatery created by the acclaimed team behind Llama San.
Lastly, Laliko, a Georgian restaurant, rounds out the list with its famed ‘mother dumpling’, further enriching the diverse culinary landscape of New York City.
While the date for Michelin’s annual awards ceremony has yet to be revealed, it is generally scheduled for late in the year. Last year’s event took place in December, and this year’s selected 14 restaurants, alongside nearly 400 other recognized establishments in the directory, will be vying for the prestigious awards that will be announced during the ceremony.
