Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute has announced the addition of Dr. Jaime A. Gomez, a board-certified pediatric spine surgeon and researcher renowned for his expertise in treating scoliosis and other complex spinal conditions in children and adolescents.
Dr. Gomez comes to Nicklaus Children’s with a wealth of experience in both operative and nonoperative approaches, particularly focusing on using growth-friendly surgical techniques for young patients.
In addition to his surgical skills, he is proficient in less invasive methods such as scoliosis casting and bracing, making him a valuable asset to one of the leading children’s orthopedic programs in the country, as recognized by U.S. News & World Report.
An active researcher, Dr. Gomez has dedicated significant time to improving clinical outcomes in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis.
His impressive background includes contributions to over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as presentations of his research at both national and international conferences.
Dr. Gomez has also participated in various medical-surgical outreach trips to the Dominican Republic, collaborating with organizations like World Spine Outreach and the Butterfly Foundation to extend care to those in need.
“It is an honor to join the world-renowned team of specialty physicians at Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute,” says Dr. Gomez.
He expressed his excitement about collaborating with pioneers in the field of pediatric spine surgery and contributing to the advanced surgical techniques that are crucial for treating complex spinal conditions.
Dr. Gomez earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, and completed his orthopedic surgical residency at Columbia University’s New York Presbyterian Hospital.
To further specialize, he pursued a pediatric orthopedic fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital, followed by a spine surgery fellowship at New York University’s Hospital for Joint Diseases.
Prior to joining Nicklaus Children’s, Dr. Gomez served as the director of Spinal Deformity and Pediatric Spine Surgery and directed Pediatric Orthopedic Education and Research at Montefiore Einstein in New York City.
He also held the position of associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics, demonstrating his commitment to education and research in the field.
“Nicklaus Children’s continues to be a national leader in treating spinal disorders in children,” says Dr. Stephen George, Medical Director of Surgical Service and Pediatric Spinal Surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s.
He emphasized how Dr. Gomez’s extensive experience and research in scoliosis treatments will help continue the legacy of excellence within the institute.
Dr. Gomez is now a part of Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists, the multispecialty medical group practice that forms part of the Nicklaus Children’s Health System.
In addition to his medical expertise, he is bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish, which allows him to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population.
