Huskies Dominate Seattle University with 22-0 Victory

In a striking display of offensive power, the Washington baseball team crushed Seattle University 22-0 on Tuesday night, showcasing their dominance at Husky Ballpark. This lopsided victory saw the Huskies (19-19, 9-6 Big Ten) waste no time in establishing control, scoring five runs in the first inning and effectively chasing Seattle’s freshman starting pitcher Isaac Hallam from the game after just 37 pitches.

The Redhawks (13-23, 4-8 WAC) struggled to find relief in the second inning, as Washington continued to build on their already significant lead. During this frame, the Huskies added three hits, culminating in a three-run home run by senior center fielder Malakhi Knight.

As the game progressed, UW’s pitching staff found its rhythm, effectively silencing Seattle’s hitters. Although the Huskies’ offense slowed somewhat after the dominant start, they still managed to rack up runs, bringing the score to 12-0 by the end of the seventh inning.

In a remarkable turn of events, the seventh inning saw the score escalate from an impressive lead to an astonishing 19-0. Washington scored three runs before Seattle could record a single out, with graduate first-baseman Julian Sanders hitting a grand slam that cleared the bases.

Desperate for a change, Seattle sent redshirt sophomore infielder Sebastian Lopez to the mound in the eighth inning. Lopez struggled, yielding three additional runs and pushing the score to 22-0. By this point, it was evident that both teams were ready for the game to conclude. The game ended with a rapid three strikeouts from Washington’s freshman pitcher Bradley Gilbert in the ninth inning, solidifying the impressive 22-0 win for the Huskies.

Head coach Eddie Smith’s lineup saw all players reach base, with an impressive 12 out of 14 batters recording a hit. Freshman outfielder Jackson Hotchkiss led the offensive charge, finishing 4 for 5 with a double and scoring four times.

Despite the overwhelming 22-run total, it’s noteworthy that Washington’s pitching was exceptional, rendering the Redhawks scoreless throughout the night. The Huskies utilized five pitchers who collectively struck out 12 while not allowing a Seattle player to reach third base, let alone score.

Junior pitcher Tommy Brandenburg started for the Huskies, dominating the Redhawks’ lineup by allowing only three hits—none of which were for extra bases—against the 20 batters he faced. With the score at 11-0 after five innings and sitting at just 73 pitches, Brandenburg was pulled from the game to preserve his arm for future outings. This victory also marked Brandenburg’s first win of the season.

The Huskies will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming series against the Illinois Fighting Illini. The first game of the three-game set is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 18, at 7:02 p.m., and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
