Two Dead and One Critically Injured in West Side Chicago Crash

A tragic accident on Chicago’s West Side has resulted in the deaths of two men and left a woman critically injured early Sunday morning.

Details surrounding the crash remain under investigation, but authorities have confirmed that it occurred after one of the drivers allegedly ran a red light.

Chicago police reported that they were responding to a separate call when they observed a dark-colored sedan speeding southbound on Central Avenue.

While the officers continued to their call, they alerted dispatch about the speeding vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, just after 2 a.m., a 36-year-old man driving another dark sedan was headed eastbound on Augusta Boulevard when he failed to stop at the red light at Central Avenue.

His vehicle collided with the previously observed sedan, also dark-colored, which led to devastating consequences.

In addition to the two sedans, a beige minivan, operated by a 45-year-old man, was also struck during the incident.

Witness Richard Barnes described the moment of the crash, saying, “Black Honda went around me on the wrong side of the street, ran the light and collided with what appeared to be a Chevy.”

The aftermath of the crash was severe, with both sedans ending up in the yards of nearby homes, and debris strewn across the area.

Residents were left shocked by the scene, which included a mangled fence and a vehicle lying in a front yard, a stark reminder of the violent impact.

Di Angelo Smith, a resident whose home suffered damage, recalled the sound of the crash, describing it as akin to an explosion.

He recounted, “To see the car just fly past, and to see the smoke everywhere and then you trying to move the smoke, and there’s debris everywhere.”

The toll from the crash included the 36-year-old man, who was driving one of the sedans.

He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A 35-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the same sedan, is currently hospitalized in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

The driver of the other sedan, a 22-year-old man, was also taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to police, the 45-year-old driver of the minivan did not report any injuries and declined medical assistance at the scene.

As the investigation continued, the Cook County Medical Examiner had yet to identify the victims, pending notification of their families.

Smith added a heart-wrenching detail to the scene, noting that one of the victims was found ejected from the car and lying in the grass, as several residents attempted to offer aid before emergency services arrived.

Currently, the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident detectives are leading the investigation into the crash, and no further information has been released at this time.
