DuSable Lake Shore Drive, however, remains one of the deadliest roadways, and current state law prohibits the installation of automated traffic enforcement on this major thoroughfare.
The law restricts such enforcement to surface streets within an eighth of a mile of schools and parks.
In June 2022, Illinois expanded the use of security cameras on expressways and interstates in response to a surge in highway shootings and carjackings.
Still, lawmakers did not take action to address the alarming number of crashes on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
