May 25 has seen several notable events in Chicago’s history, spanning from tragic accidents to cultural milestones.

One of the most devastating incidents occurred in 1950 when a Chicago Transit Authority Green Hornet streetcar collided with a gas truck on State Street near 62nd Street.

This accident claimed the lives of 34 individuals, making it the deadliest traffic incident in Chicago’s history and the worst streetcar disaster in the United States.

At that time, the streetcar’s doors lacked emergency pulls, a safety measure now mandated on all CTA vehicles.
