Race Against Gun Violence Returns to Chicago for Its 12th Year

The annual Race Against Gun Violence, organized by Strides for Peace, will take place for the 12th consecutive year at Grant Park on June 5, 2025.

This event, born out of tragedy, has evolved into a significant fundraising occasion aimed at tackling the pervasive issue of gun violence in Chicago.

Founded in memory of Blair Holt, a 16-year-old who lost his life to gun violence on a CTA bus in 2007, Strides for Peace aims to unite Chicago communities in a show of solidarity.

Maggie Baczkowski, the organization’s founder, was inspired to take action after the impact of Holt’s death resonated within the city.

Rubye Lane, the director of Community Outreach for Strides for Peace, emphasizes the goal of bringing together people from across Chicago to run, walk, or jog in the name of a shared cause.

Lane notes, “The goal was basically to get communities from north, south, east, and west all together to run as a way to come together,” highlighting the event’s mission to raise funds for grassroots organizations actively combatting gun violence.

Last year, the Race Against Gun Violence saw nearly 1,500 participants and raised over $250,000.

This year, the event anticipates a turnout of 2,000 to 3,000 runners, as Lane expresses confidence in accommodating an expanding audience.

The funds generated from the race will significantly benefit local organizations, including Diane Latiker’s “Kids Off the Block” in Roseland and the “Paving the Way” initiative in Washington Park.

These groups focus on life-affirming programming and resources, which are critical for providing shelter and activities for youth at risk.

“We know that providing resources, whether it’s shelter or activities, is saving lives,” Lane asserts.

Participants can expect various formats for engaging in the race, including an 8K, a 5K, a two-mile walk, and a special “Kids for Peace” sprint.

Despite the course remaining largely the same and certified by USA Track & Field, the overall experience is set to be enhanced this year.

Event highlights will include a village where community organizations can interact with attendees, a program featuring distinction awards, and live music throughout the day.

Lane describes the race day as an opportunity for reflection and inspiration, noting that it’s not just a day for running, but an occasion to honor those devoted to changing the narrative around gun violence in Chicago.

In terms of corporate engagement, Strides for Peace has received substantial support from various organizations, including the Burt Family Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield, the University of Chicago Crime Lab, and the Field Foundation.

Lane emphasizes that these corporate partners recognize the importance of the race and see the long-term vision of Strides for Peace.

“This is not just a South Side issue. This is not just a West Austin issue. This is a Chicago issue, and more or less, it’s a national issue,” Lane explains.

Looking forward, Lane envisions the Race Against Gun Violence as a model that could extend beyond Chicago—a national movement to address gun violence.

She imagines similar races occurring in major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and St. Louis, seeing potential for this initiative to empower organizations nationwide.

“We know that if we work hand in hand with our community organizations and partners, that this race can be duplicated across the country,” she asserts.

Lane believes this event could serve as a template for towns and cities big and small, fostering collaboration between local organizations and passionate corporate supporters dedicated to creating safe living conditions.

As the race approaches, Lane encourages community members to participate and enjoy the day together.

“Surrounding neighborhoods can expect a great race with good people who are doing exceptional work,” she says enthusiastically.

On June 5, participants will have the chance to engage, reflect, and ultimately feel inspired to enact positive change within their communities.
