Tufts Student Faces Visa Revocation After Controversial Op-Ed

Rumeysa Ozturk, a 30-year-old doctoral student from Turkey, has become the center of controversy after her student visa was revoked due to her alleged support of the terrorist group Hamas.

Ozturk was detained by federal agents in Somerville on March 25, shortly after her visa revocation, stemming from an op-ed piece she co-wrote for The Tufts Daily, which has drawn criticism for its anti-Israel stance.

While specifics surrounding the legal basis for her detention remain unclear, it has been reported that her involvement in activities supportive of Hamas played a significant role in the decision.

In response to Ozturk’s situation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the administration’s stance regarding visa holders who engage in pro-terrorism sentiments.

“We do it every day,” Rubio stated. “Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visa.”

He emphasized that visas are granted to individuals to pursue education and not to engage in social activism that incites division or unrest on American campuses.

“If we’ve given you a visa and you decide to do that, we’re going to take it away,” Rubio asserted, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to controlling the activities of visa holders.
