Sasami and Mood Killer Dazzle at Neumos with a Night of Hyperpop and Ethereal Performances

On May 21, Neumos transformed into a vibrant energy hub as Sasami and her opener Mood Killer captivated the audience with their audacious performances.

The atmosphere was electric, packed with a blend of excitement, astonishment, and a hint of fear, as concert-goers reveled in the spectacle of the night.

Mood Killer, a queer hyper-pop icon, kicked off the evening with a mesmerizing entry that set the tone for an unforgettable performance.

As they took the stage with the dynamic song “Face the Music,” the crowd was immediately drawn into their magnetic aura, with flashing lights in hues of red, blue, white, and green enhancing the experience.

With each lyric of their hit “Stream this Song,” Mood Killer enchanted the audience, asking, “which one of you is gonna murder me” while playfully singling out fans, creating a thrilling connection.

The set featured various vocal dynamics, dancing, and impressive ribbon-waving skills, especially during their titular track “Abracadabra.” Mood Killer’s use of a vibrant red ribbon brought an almost surreal quality to their performance, as it swayed along with the rhythm of the music, highlighting the hyper-pop haunted house theme they crafted on stage.

After a brief intermission, Sasami brought a new wave of energy with an angelic choir, captivating the audience as she twirled onto the stage, her French horn in hand.

A former primary school teacher and classically trained musician, Sasami showcased her multifaceted talents alongside her drummer, Diego, creating a minimalistic yet compelling sound.

Sasami began her set with “Figure it Out,” a poignant track from her latest album, “Blood on the Silver Screen,” infusing it with raw emotion and electric distortion that resonated deeply with the crowd.

Her subsequent song, “Honeycrash,” illuminated by a soft orange spotlight, enhanced her ethereal presence as she floated through the performance, leaving the audience mesmerized by her enchanting aura.

Throughout her concert, Sasami’s wit and humor shone bright as she engaged with the audience, spinning tales of her random thoughts, such as an allergy-induced nose situation.

Her playful banter created an intimate atmosphere that blended seamlessly with her music and showcased her charismatic personality.

Intriguingly, Sasami also took the opportunity to highlight her drummer’s talents, marveling at his double kick skills, humorously labeling him as being in “Bowser mode” during the fast-paced numbers.

As the show progressed, Sasami invited the audience to form a mosh pit before her song “Need it To Work.” Initially hesitant, many fans soon found themselves swept up in the pulsating energy of the pit, adding a charged atmosphere that was palpable.

She concluded her set with “Slugger,” a powerful anthem encouraging self-empowerment and personal boundaries, which resonated with the crowd.

As the concert wound down, the audience waved their hands and soaked in the final moments, fully immersed in the experience. Sasami, who famously avoids encores—dubbed “adult peekaboo”—left fans craving more yet satisfied with the genuine connection forged during the evening’s performance.

Mood Killer’s and Sasami’s sensational sets demonstrated a mastery of their craft, providing an authentic and visually stunning experience that stood out in the live music scene.

The tour for Sasami’s “Blood on the Silver Screen” wraps up in San Francisco on May 25, but fans can catch her perform at FWB Fest on August 2.
