Los Angeles Libraries Launch Engaging Summer Reading Programs for All Ages

The Los Angeles Public Library and county public library systems are gearing up for an exciting summer reading program, which aims to boost literacy and keep families engaged in learning during the warmer months.

With the current emphasis on supporting nonprofit journalism and community engagement, libraries are stepping up to create a vibrant atmosphere for readers of all ages in the city.

In the summer of 2023, the Los Angeles Public Library’s tote bag, designed by local artist Alexander Vidal, went viral among readers.

This year’s tote features a unique design with various critters curiously peeking into books, symbolizing the joy of reading.

To receive the tote, participants must log three weeks of reading or library activities, ensuring increased engagement throughout the program.

Phoebe Guiot, who oversees youth services at the Los Angeles Public Library, explained that a shift in the design of the tote was intentional.

Previously, the tote was a mere participation prize that attendees could collect without commitment.

This change aims to encourage a deeper connection between readers and the library, nurturing a habit of continuous engagement.

For individuals of all ages, the Los Angeles Public Library boasts an impressive collection exceeding 6 million print, audio, and digital resources, making it a valuable community treasure.

Guiot emphasized that the library’s materials are inclusive and diverse, which helps broaden the perspectives of readers, particularly children and teens.

To participate in the summer reading program, individuals can visit their local Los Angeles Public Library branch to collect a paper reading log, or they can download one online available in nine languages.

For those who prefer a digital approach, the Beanstack app allows users to track their reading and activities conveniently.

As part of their participation, everyone who signs up will receive a sticker sheet, while children and teens will also gain a free book upon registration.

Starting June 15, participants who log a minimum of three weeks of reading or activities will be able to collect their coveted tote bags.

Moreover, those who complete the summer reading program can enter a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card, with each library branch offering three prizes.

For the Los Angeles County Library, the summer reading program offers a wide array of exciting prizes.

From bath crayons for early learners to gift vouchers for In-N-Out burger for teens and stylish tumblers for adults, the incentives are crafted to engage everyone in the community.

In addition, participants of the County Library program can enter to win a 4-pack of tickets to the popular Raging Waters theme park, with five packages available per library branch.

The libraries encourage families to check out books over the summer, as signing up for a library card is essential.

Individuals can fill out an application in-person or online, providing just a valid ID to obtain a library card.

Southern California is home to numerous library systems, many of which have their own unique summer reading programs with separate rewards, allowing readers to engage in multiple challenges by creating accounts in the Beanstack app.

In light of the importance of maintaining academic skills during the summer, the Los Angeles County Public Library is expanding its free, in-person tutoring program for elementary school students to 45 locations this summer.

As children continue to face challenges in reading and math, exacerbated by the pandemic, the library is responding to the needs expressed by families.

County librarian Skye Patrick noted, “Parents told us what they needed… getting their students mobilized for the school year was critical.”

The Summer Stars tutoring sessions, which begin in mid-June, are highly encouraged for families to sign up for as early as possible through the County Library’s website.

Last summer, more than 2,700 students benefited from nearly 14,000 tutoring sessions.

According to pre- and post-tests, participating students demonstrated significant improvements in both reading and math by the program’s conclusion.

Overall, Los Angeles libraries are not only providing resources but are also fostering a culture of learning and engagement within the community this summer.
