As Broadway gears up for its biggest night of the year, anticipation is building with the 2024 Tony Awards set to take place on June 8 at 7 p.m. from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, marking a momentous occasion for theater enthusiasts across the nation.
This year’s awards will be hosted by the multi-talented Cynthia Erivo, who is a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner, as well as a three-time Oscar nominee.
Having recently released her album ‘I Forgive You,’ Erivo is making her debut as the host of the Tonys and is known for her acclaimed performance in ‘Wicked.’
A total of twenty-nine shows on Broadway received nominations this season, yet only a select few will take home prestigious trophies before an eager audience.
Leading the pack with the highest number of nominations are three shows: ‘Buena Vista Social Club,’ which takes inspiration from Wim Wenders’ Oscar-nominated documentary; ‘Death Becomes Her,’ inspired by the 1992 cult classic film; and ‘Dead Outlaw,’ telling the story of a real-life alcoholic drifter caught in a bizarre afterlife situation.
Each of these productions has garnered ten nominations, showcasing both their popularity and critical acclaim.
In the race for best new play and new musical, figures stand out: for new musicals, the contenders are ‘Buena Vista Social Club,’ ‘Dead Outlaw,’ ‘Death Becomes Her,’ ‘Maybe Happy Ending,’ and ‘Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.’
For new plays, the nominees include ‘English,’ ‘The Hills of California,’ ‘John Proctor Is the Villain,’ ‘Oh, Mary!’ and the Pulitzer Prize-winning ‘Purpose’— a family drama that enjoyed its world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2024 and is nominated for six awards.
The 2024 Tony Awards could be a historic evening for several performers.
Audra McDonald, the most awarded performer in Tony Awards history with six wins, is poised to add to her remarkable record with her leading role in the revival of ‘Gypsy.’
If victorious, McDonald will become the first performer to reach seven Tony Awards.
Additionally, Kara Young could make history as the first Black actress to receive nominations for four consecutive years and might win her second Tony for her role in ‘Purpose.’
Other potential milestones include Daniel Dae Kim, who could become the first Asian winner in the category of best leading actor in a play for his work in ‘Yellow Face,’ as well as Marjan Neshat and Tala Ashe, who are both vying to be the first female actors of Iranian descent to win a Tony.
A special performance is also scheduled for the evening, which will mark the 10th anniversary of ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway.
The original cast, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and several leading actors, will take the stage to celebrate this significant milestone in musical theater history.
Reflecting on the current state of Broadway, the theater scene has rebounded significantly following the challenges faced during the pandemic.
The 2024-2025 season saw a remarkable box office return, with total earnings reaching $1.9 billion, the highest-grossing season ever recorded, surpassing the pre-pandemic figure of $1.8 billion from the 2018-2019 season.
In attendance, nearly 14.7 million ticket buyers flocked to Broadway, marking the second best-attended season on record, just behind the 2018-2019 season.
However, soaring ticket prices have raised concerns about accessibility and whether Broadway is becoming financially out of reach for everyday audiences.
One standout production, a revival of ‘Othello’ featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, set the record for the top-grossing play in Broadway history, pulling in a staggering $2,818,297 for just eight performances—with ticket prices soaring as high as $921.
As June 8 approaches, all eyes will be on the star-studded ceremony that celebrates the exceptional talent and creativity of Broadway.
