Trump and Musk Feud Escalates, No Call Scheduled to Resolve Tensions

In a surprising turn of events, President Donald Trump will not be holding a scheduled call with billionaire Elon Musk, according to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.

“There are no plans for that today,” Wiles told NBC News, dismissing reports that aides had arranged a call for Friday to mend the rift between the two influential figures.

A senior White House official also confirmed that Trump is “not interested” in a conversation with Musk.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Trump is currently focused on the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a GOP domestic policy bill that Musk recently criticized—an action that triggered the ongoing conflict.

“That’s the mindset he left the Oval Office in yesterday,” she added, indicating Trump’s prioritization of the legislative agenda over reconciliation efforts.

While the administration considers options for de-escalation, an official remarked, “There could be anything… But there are no calls on the books, at least not now.”

In light of the growing tension, White House aides convened for at least two closed-door meetings Thursday to devise a strategy for responding to Musk’s barrage of social media updates.

Vice President JD Vance was with Trump during the eruption of tweets, and the two reportedly communicated multiple times that day.

Vance later defended Trump in a post on X, reaffirming Trump’s commitment and influence within the movement he leads.

Musk’s involvement with the White House has historically included friction with administration officials, particularly regarding his influence and approach at the Department of Government Efficiency.

Wiles, in particular, has faced irritation over Musk’s attempts to direct Cabinet secretaries and staffers.

As the conflict deepens, there is speculation that movement will occur to replace some officials perceived as supporters of Musk.

Despite the escalating feud, a person close to Trump suggested that the president would prefer Musk to pause his remarks before they could potentially smooth things over.

The individual cited, “He would want to see Elon be quiet for a while and then Elon reach out to him and say sorry. I think the president would then let it go.”

As tensions built, Trump expressed disappointment over Musk’s criticism of the GOP policy bill, which Musk labeled a “disgusting abomination.”

During a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump lamented, “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people.”

Trump further stated, “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

He pointed to Musk’s dissatisfaction with the bill’s removal of a tax credit for electric vehicles as a potential catalyst for Musk’s disparagement.

In response, Musk denied familiarity with the legislation, claiming, “False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

The day accelerated with both men trading barbs through their respective social media platforms—Musk on X and Trump on Truth Social.

Musk’s social media activity included more than 40 posts in a single day criticizing the GOP tax proposal and reacting to Trump’s remarks.

This ongoing public spat has not gone unnoticed in Congress, as lawmakers are closely monitoring the fallout.

Some Democrats express uncertainty about how Musk’s stance will affect efforts to block Trump’s legislation.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) suggested that while Musk’s disapproval might carry some weight, Republicans remain significantly more apprehensive about Trump than they do about Musk.

In a related discussion, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) characterized Musk’s recent posts as “surprising and disappointing” while also pushing back against a narrative that overstates Musk’s role in previous Republican victories.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), chair of a House subcommittee focused on government efficiency, voiced her discontent regarding Musk’s conduct but acknowledged that her disagreements with the GOP bill’s cost should not prompt personal attacks.

Meanwhile, other Republicans are opting for neutrality amidst the turmoil.

“It’s a good verse in Proverbs: ‘Stay out of fights,’” remarked Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), emphasizing his intention to avoid involvement in the escalating conflict between Trump and Musk.

As the feud continues to dominate headlines, the potential for reconciliation remains uncertain, with both figures holding their positions firmly.
