As summer descends upon Las Vegas and school is out of session, families in the valley are discovering exciting ways to spend quality time together.
In a city known for its opulent hotels and vibrant tourist attractions, it can be a challenge for locals to find engaging summer activities that fit the bill.
Thankfully, a plethora of options exists for families, ranging from refreshing indoor escapes to thrilling outdoor adventures.
For those seeking ways to beat the summer heat, local swimming pools offer a perfect solution.
Russell Thompson, a recreation and cultural specialist for Clark County, urges families to explore various aquatic facilities in the area.
“At the Desert Breeze Community Center, families can take part in a range of outdoor pool activities throughout the week,” Thompson shared.
“Other great options include the Hollywood Aquatic Center and the Cora Coleman Senior aquatics facility.
Whether you want to sunbathe or enjoy water slides, there’s something for everyone.”
Summer camps are an excellent choice for keeping children both active and mentally stimulated.
Thompson emphasized the unique offerings at local recreation centers, stating, “For instance, the Vegas Golden Knights recently visited the Desert Breeze Community Center to teach hockey fundamentals, and the public library is also involved in instilling a love for reading.”
Camps include sports, arts and crafts, board games, and other fun activities, ensuring kids have an enriching summer experience.
Families eager for outdoor experiences can still enjoy hiking, provided they plan ahead.
Reannon Muth, a contributor to Desert Companion magazine and organizer of the Facebook group Tiny Hikes and Adventures in Las Vegas, advises hitting the trails early to avoid the heat.
“Red Rock Canyon offers ranger-led hikes at 7:30 a.m. suitable for families, and after sunset, there’s an exciting scorpion hunt using black lights,” Muth revealed.
For families preferring indoor activities over outdoor adventures, Muth recommends Uptown Jungle, known for its affordability.
“For just $20 a month, families can enjoy unlimited visits, which is great for kids of all ages, featuring rock climbing and trampolines,” she added.
Another great venue is Ninja Kidz Action Park, which also has a similar membership setup.
When families have had their fill of play, numerous educational activities await them.
Well-known attractions like Springs Preserve and the Children’s Discovery Museum are popular, but Muth suggests visiting the lesser-known Clark County Museum.
“It’s a small, charming museum that doesn’t attract large crowds, even in summer, and it features historical Vegas homes to explore,” Muth shared.
Additionally, Thompson highlights The Clark County Wetlands, offering a learning center where families can encounter live desert creatures, engage in crafts, and explore a variety of interactive exhibits.
With so many options available, Las Vegas families are set to have an unforgettable summer filled with adventure and learning.
