In a controversial move, President Donald Trump has announced the activation of National Guard troops in Los Angeles, a decision met with strong opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
This activation is executed under Title 10, which enables the federal government to mobilize National Guard troops for domestic or overseas service, a measure that has rarely been used in recent history.
In a memo addressed to the Defense and Homeland Security departments, President Trump indicated that the National Guard was being called into federal service to ‘temporarily protect ICE and other United States Government personnel who are performing Federal functions.’
Erwin Chemerinsky, a prominent constitutional law scholar, has expressed deep concerns regarding this action. He described the federal government’s takeover of the California National Guard without the governor’s request as alarming.
