Severe Weather Causes Major Disruptions Across U.S. Airports: Over 800 Flights Affected

Over 800 flights across the United States faced delays or cancellations this weekend as waves of severe weather brought heavy rain and strong winds to several major cities.

Major airports including JFK, LaGuardia, Detroit Metro, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson struggled to maintain flight schedules during one of the peak summer travel periods.

Airlines such as Air Canada, Delta, American, JetBlue, and WestJet were particularly hard hit as weather systems worsened, leading to cascading disruptions across domestic and international routes.

In Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport, the impact was severe, with 54 delays and 24 cancellations reported, entirely due to steady rain.

Regional carrier Endeavor Air was the most affected, grounding 17 flights—approximately 11% of its scheduled operations—and delaying an additional 24, which accounted for 16% of its timetable.

Delta Air Lines also encountered challenges, experiencing 5 cancellations alongside 19 delays.

Other airlines affected at Detroit included Frontier, which canceled 2 flights and delayed 1, while JetBlue, Spirit, Mesa, SkyWest, Southwest, WestJet, and American Airlines all reported minor delays ranging from 1 to 2 flights each.

Despite achieving fewer cancellations, these additional delays contributed to operational bottlenecks as aircraft awaited clearance for takeoff or landing.

Similar disruptions were reported at New York’s LaGuardia Airport due to rainstorms, where 36 flights were delayed and 15 canceled.

Once again, Endeavor Air faced the highest number of cancellations, with 13 flights impacted, making up about 6% of its schedule.

The regional carrier also delayed an additional 19 flights.

Delta managed 8 delays but no cancellations at LaGuardia, while Air Canada reported one canceled flight and Republic Airways logged 1 cancellation and 4 delays.

Both JetBlue and American Airlines experienced minor delays, attempting to keep flights running amidst the inclement weather.

As one moves further south to Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport faced its share of troubles.

The airport, known as the world’s busiest hub for passenger traffic, reported 223 delays and 12 cancellations due to strong winds disrupting southbound travel.

Delta Air Lines, the dominant carrier in Atlanta, was the hardest hit with 162 delays, which represented about 9% of its total flight operations, though the airline did not record any cancellations.

Endeavor Air also struggled in Atlanta, canceling 11 flights and delaying another 12.

Other affected carriers included Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, Southwest, American Airlines, and United, along with international airlines such as Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, and Aeroméxico Connect that reported delays or grounded flights amid the challenging conditions.

Cargo and regional carriers were also impacted, with Cargolux Airlines International, Key Lime Air, and HiSky Europe facing delays, while Jazz and PSA Airlines recorded significant disruption despite having smaller operations.

JFK Airport reported over 120 delays attributed to strong coastal winds, which resulted in 121 delays and 17 cancellations.

Endeavor Air topped the list at JFK with 11 cancellations and 27 delays, while Delta Air Lines experienced 40 delays but no cancellations.

JetBlue managed to maintain its schedule amid the chaos with 24 delays, avoiding cancellations.

Several international airlines, including British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, KLM, Saudia, and Swiss, faced delays at JFK, exacerbating the situation further.

Frontier Airlines reported 2 cancellations, while Alaska Airlines noted 2 cancellations and 1 delay impacting their operations.

The total number of affected flights across the four major U.S. airports reached 843, with 143 cancellations and 700 delays.

As airports continued to grapple with surging passenger volumes and tight schedules during this critical summer weekend, airlines like Air Canada, Delta, JetBlue, American, WestJet, and their regional partners encountered significant challenges in recovering schedules, rerouting flights, and rebooking passengers.

The need for travelers to prepare for delays has never been more crucial, given the intensity of storm patterns as summer approaches.

The FAA has already warned of potential impacts to other hubs in the coming days, encouraging travelers to double-check flight statuses with their airlines prior to arriving at the airport.

Weather-related interruptions are a common occurrence during this time of year. However, the scale of disturbances this weekend has heightened concerns regarding infrastructure stress, airline staffing, and responses to real-time weather challenges.

Airports across the eastern United States are actively working to alleviate backlogs.

Meanwhile, passengers—many traveling for vacations, graduations, or business—face the realities of traveling during peak demand when unexpected weather can disrupt multiple journeys within hours.

The chaos that ensued this weekend serves as a reminder that, despite preparations and schedules, the unpredictability of the weather can significantly affect air travel and passenger plans.
