Job Cuts Announced by Prime Healthcare at Chicago Area Hospitals

Prime Healthcare, a California-based hospital group, has announced plans to cut approximately 100 jobs across its eight hospital sites and clinics in the Chicago area.

This decision was confirmed by the group in an email to NBC Chicago, indicating that “staffing consolidations” began last week and are expected to conclude by next month.

According to a spokesperson from Prime, the positions being eliminated are either “duplicated” or “not aligned with the care model and service line offerings.”

Notably, the affected positions do not include union roles, and most of the jobs targeted for cuts do not involve direct patient care.

Moreover, Prime stated that comparable positions are available, with all impacted employees being invited to apply for any of the more than 900 open roles across Prime’s Illinois facilities.

In making this decision, Prime also assured that the cuts will “not affect” the quality of care provided by its institutions, asserting that the measure will support the expansion of best practices from its operations nationwide.

These job cuts follow a series of significant changes within the hospital system since its acquisition of several Ascension hospitals in Illinois less than four months ago.

In April, the Illinois Department of Health stripped Mercy Medical Center in Aurora of its Level II trauma center status due to the hospital’s “absence of essential services.”

As a result, severely injured patients must now be transported to alternative hospitals for care.

When questioned about this designation loss, Prime confirmed that it was the entity that withdrew the hospital’s designation, arguing that the Level II status did not
