Portland Prepares for Juneteenth Celebrations with Diverse Events

As the annual celebration of Juneteenth approaches, Portland is gearing up for a wide array of events that honor this significant day in American history.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union troops enforced the abolition of slavery in Texas, effectively freeing the last remaining enslaved African Americans. It wasn’t until 2021 that Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday, and Oregon followed suit by declaring Juneteenth a state holiday in 2022.

With festivities taking place throughout the city, Portland residents are invited to participate in various celebrations that include festivals, educational activities, and opportunities to support local Black-owned businesses.

One of the hallmark events is the 53rd Annual Juneteenth Festival and Parade, scheduled for Saturday, June 21, from noon to 7 p.m. The parade, known as the Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade, will kick off at 11 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School, proceeding down Martin Luther King Boulevard to Lillis-Albina Park.

The festival promises to entertain attendees with performances by artists such as Tahirah Memory, Kirk Green, Versatyl, and Bridge City Soul. In addition to live music, the event will feature food vendors, a beer and wine garden, activities for children, and raffles. Juneteenth Oregon, the nonprofit organization behind the festival, focuses on connecting and strengthening communities while promoting awareness of the history of Juneteenth.

For those with a flair for fashion, the Bloom Runway Dynasty IX will take place on the evening of Saturday, June 21, at The Melody Ballroom. This long-awaited event returns after a five-year hiatus and will showcase BIPOC designers who blend high fashion, streetwear, and cultural elements.

Attendees can browse a curated marketplace featuring BIPOC-owned brands, enjoy a live spoken word performance by Majik, and experience a post-show dance party mixer with DJ Solo.

On Wednesday, June 18, Dawson Park will host a free Juneteenth Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., organized by The Miracles Club Outreach Team. This event will offer a variety of activities, including food, free haircuts, a domino tournament, and basketball contests, along with fun treats like snow cones and cotton candy.

The celebrations will continue at The Miracles Club from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, featuring music, guest speakers, children’s activities, and a barbecue. The Miracles Club serves as a community recovery center, providing peer services for addiction within the African American community, and facilitating a range of events and programs.

The Portland Art Museum will also be holding an event titled “Power of Place” on Thursday, June 19, at 7 p.m. Community members are invited to join in a film screening that showcases personal stories related to Black identity and belonging.

Two short films, “Dear Young Black Portland” and “Where We Goin: The Power of Place,” will be screened, followed by an interactive discussion with the filmmakers and local participants who contributed to the stories.

For a more tranquil experience, Leach Botanical Garden will offer free admission on Thursday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to explore the garden’s rich collection of native plants, though they are advised to arrive early as parking is limited.

Another exciting event is the 8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo, set for Sunday, June 15, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Founded by Portland native Ivan McLellan, this rodeo seeks to spotlight the traditions of Black cowboys and cowgirls. Spectators will enjoy classic rodeo events such as bull riding and barrel racing, featuring some of the nation’s top Black rodeo athletes. Tickets are still available but are running low.

Lastly, Portlanders are encouraged to dine and shop at local Black-owned businesses during this festive period. A complete directory of Black-owned eateries and shops can be found online at iloveblackfood.com/pdx-directory, providing ample options for those looking to support the community while enjoying good food and shopping.

Juneteenth is a time for reflection, celebration, and community engagement, and Portland is ready to commemorate this pivotal moment in American history with a variety of meaningful events.
