Minnesota Politicians Targeted in Violent Shootings: State Rep. Killed, Senator Injured

In a shocking incident early Saturday morning, Minnesota state representatives were victims of an apparent targeted political attack, resulting in the tragic death of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were seriously wounded.

Governor Tim Walz announced the unfolding tragedy at a press conference, describing the killings as a politically-motivated assassination, particularly highlighting the loss of Hortman, who was a former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Hortman was described as a “formidable public servant” by Walz, who emphasized that her contributions to the state would make her “irreplaceable.”

The attacks occurred less than an hour apart in the suburban areas of Champlin and Brooklyn Park, located just north of Minneapolis. The incident began around 2 a.m. when Senator Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times at their home in Champlin, prompting law enforcement to proactively check on Hortman.

Around 3:35 a.m., authorities encountered a suspect outside Hortman’s home, dressed like a police officer. The suspect, equipped with a vest, a badge, and additional police equipment, opened fire on officers who arrived on the scene, leading to an exchange of gunfire as the perpetrator managed to escape on foot.

According to law enforcement, the suspect’s vehicle, notably resembling a law enforcement vehicle with police lights, was found in Hortman’s driveway. A list of potential targets was discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, which included Hortman and Hoffman, along with numerous other notable Democrats.

Among those named on the list were Governor Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, and state Attorney General Keith Ellison.

Authorities are investigating whether the suspect was motivated by extreme political views, specifically those concerning abortion. To ensure the safety of those potentially in danger, security measures have been increased for individuals identified on the list.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the violent incidents, with White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stating that “such horrific violence will not be tolerated,” echoing the sentiments of several other officials.

Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the necessity of stringent legal repercussions for the perpetrator, stating, “This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned the incident, underscoring that every leader must take a stand against such violence.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, who previously served as chair of the Minnesota Democratic Party, expressed his sorrow over the loss of Hortman and the injuries to the Hoffmans. He praised Hortman for her leadership and contributions ranging from advancing children’s free lunch programs to safeguarding women’s rights and reproductive health.

Martin described Hortman as a close friend and a strong ally, saying, “If this murderer thinks we will be silenced, he’s wrong,” indicating a commitment to continue the fight for values nurtured by Hortman and her husband.

In the wake of these events, Melissa Hortman’s sister-in-law conveyed her devastation, saying, “We loved them dearly. I hope they catch him and they get justice for what happened. It’s devastating.”

Law enforcement continues to coordinate efforts with federal agencies as the manhunt for the suspect persists, urging residents to exercise caution. A shelter-in-place order has been enacted in Brooklyn Park as a precaution.

Authorities have advised residents to be vigilant and confirm the identity of any officers who come to their doors by calling 911. They have cautioned against opening doors to solitary police officers, reminding the public that licensed officers should be working in pairs.

Governor Walz has also advised residents to avoid attending any political rallies in the state until the suspect is apprehended, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by the situation.

Additionally, fliers stating “No Kings” were located in the suspect’s vehicle, connecting the incident to broader protests happening nationwide against perceived governmental authority and the Trump administration.

In tandem with the Minnesota attacks, Texas state officials evacuated the state capitol due to a “credible threat” against lawmakers related to similar protests scheduled across the country. Thousands of “No Kings Day” events were organized nationwide to demonstrate opposition to the Trump administration and other governing authorities.

As the situation remains fluid, the communities affected continue to grapple with the implications of this violence. With a manhunt underway, many await further developments in this tragic unfolding of events.
