A Washington, D.C. man, Marlon Adilson Melendez, was sentenced to life plus 60 years in prison on Friday after being convicted of child abuse and the murder of his girlfriend’s 16-month-old son.
The sentencing took place in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Rockville, following Melendez’s conviction in February on multiple charges, including first-degree child abuse resulting in death, first- and second-degree child abuse, and second-degree murder. The tragic incident occurred in March 2023, and the child, who was not related to Melendez, lost his life under horrific circumstances.
During the hearing, Judge Jill Cummins noted the severity of the case, emphasizing that there was no way to provide justice for the child, but there was no reason to impose anything less than the maximum sentence.
State’s Attorney John McCarthy expressed his condolences to the victim’s family in the wake of the conviction. “This is an outrageously sad case involving the loss of a one-year-old baby,” he stated. Additionally, he thanked the Montgomery County Police for their thorough investigation that led to the prosecution’s successful pursuit of justice.
The investigation into the child’s death began on March 11, 2023, when officers and emergency crews responded to an emergency report at Melendez’s girlfriend’s apartment. Upon arrival, they found the toddler unresponsive and transported him to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival despite efforts to revive him.
An autopsy determined the cause of death to be a homicide due to blunt force injuries. The investigation revealed that Melendez had been abusing the toddler leading up to his death.
Melendez, 30, had been living with his girlfriend, whose son was at the center of the abuse allegations. As part of the investigation, it was revealed that on March 10, the toddler had been displaying symptoms of illness, including persistent vomiting and refusal to eat, which concerned the mother.
Later that evening, the mother placed her son to sleep on a mattress next to the living room couch while she rested nearby. Shortly before 4 a.m., she noticed something was wrong with her child. Alarmed, she called Melendez, who then dialed 911 while she accompanied her son to the hospital.
Upon examination at the hospital, forensic investigators observed numerous bruises and scratches on the toddler’s body, leading to further scrutiny that uncovered severe internal injuries. Notably, the toddler suffered a broken femur, multiple broken ribs, and a perforated small intestine that resulted in an infection. It was determined that the internal injuries were consistent with child abuse and likely attributable to blunt force trauma occurring shortly before the child’s death.
The investigation progressed as detectives obtained search warrants for Melendez’s and his girlfriend’s cellphones. Records from the mother’s phone indicated both physical and emotional abuse. Alarmingly, data retrieved from Melendez’s phone showed he searched for terms like “internal bruising” shortly after the incident and deleted his browser history just hours after the boy’s death while law enforcement was still present at the scene.
Additionally, security footage from Pupuseria Doña Azucena, a local restaurant, revealed an alarming incident involving Melendez just days before the child’s death. The footage documented Melendez engaging in troubling behavior toward the child, including smearing juice from a lemon into the boy’s eye and pulling his hair, which distressingly led to the child losing hair.
Following these significant findings, an arrest warrant for Melendez was issued on May 19, 2023. He was subsequently apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Task Force a few days later.
At his sentencing, Judge Cummins underscored the need for a maximum penalty given the heinous nature of the crimes committed.
The community is left to grapple with the tragedy of a young life lost under the care of an adult who was supposed to protect him, highlighting significant concerns regarding child protection in domestic settings.
Melendez’s conviction serves as a grim reminder of the responsibilities adults carry in safeguarding children’s well-being and the devastating consequences of failing to fulfill that duty.
