Juneteenth Celebrations Highlight the Importance of U.S. History

As Juneteenth approaches, Americans prepare to commemorate this significant day in U.S. history, which falls on the third Thursday in June this year.

While government officials at both federal and state levels receive the day off, many private companies are not mandated to observe Juneteenth as a holiday.

Chick-fil-A, the popular Southern restaurant chain based in College Park, typically remains open on Juneteenth. However, the decision ultimately lies with individual franchise owner-operators, who can choose whether to observe various holidays, with Thanksgiving and Christmas being exceptions due to mandatory closures.

Home Depot will keep all its stores and offices open on Juneteenth. Employees who work on this federal holiday will receive overtime pay, in line with company policy.

Delta Air Lines, which has its headquarters in Atlanta, will also have its offices open on Juneteenth. Yet, the airline provides its employees with two floating holiday options annually, allowing them flexibility to observe holidays that hold personal significance.

In addition to this flexibility, Delta will participate in community outreach activities. On June 18, 150 volunteers will help pack meal kits for food-insecure individuals in partnership with local organizations, while also participating in a Read & Craft event in New York, focusing on Juneteenth-themed stories and activities for students.

Aflac, the insurance provider based in Columbus, Georgia, will close its doors in observance of Juneteenth, granting all employees the day off.

A spokesperson announced that certain staff members would volunteer at local Juneteenth events and that an optional observance featuring a guest speaker discussing the holiday’s historical significance would take place the following week.

Furthermore, Aflac plans to share stories relating to Juneteenth on its intranet for employees to recognize the holiday’s relevance.

In contrast, UPS will remain open on Juneteenth, maintaining its store locations and offering pickup and delivery services without interruption.

Truist, although not based in Atlanta, has a significant presence in the area. They typically follow the federal holiday schedule. All employees who work 20 hours or more are eligible for paid holidays, including Juneteenth.

The World of Coca-Cola in downtown Atlanta will welcome visitors on Juneteenth, though the Coca-Cola Credit Union will be closed, reflecting differing holiday policies within the organization.

The Georgia Aquarium, which operates year-round, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on June 19, welcoming guests until 8:30 p.m.

Six Flags Over Georgia will also function on regular hours, operating from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and hosting a special Juneteenth celebration featuring games, live music, R&B bingo, and various prizes at JB’s Sports Bar & Grille.

Several companies, including Invesco and Zaxby’s, did not respond to multiple inquiries about their plans for Juneteenth.

Coca-Cola also failed to provide information regarding the holiday schedule for employees not associated with the credit union or the World of Coca-Cola.
